Decor Beds should have no effect on either. (crew or passenger)
Disclaimer: I reserve the right to be wrong at any time.
I don't think that you are allowed more than 8.
I haven't tried an empty hab yet.
Prior to the update, I would buy an apartment and set up a base. Normally the Stretch apartment in Akila City. It's close to all the shops I need with the least amount of load screens. Base building required to much busy work.
After the patch, I'm experimenting with my ship being the one stop shop and base for everything. Really happy with being able to decorate the interior and adding all the bits I need. So I no longer need to add a workshop hab, I can add the required workstations in non workshop and non science habs. A really nice touch.

I never went beyond 8 crew, but there is a way to have up to 10 as described in the guide^
Sorry I think everyone has misunderstood me here. I'm trying to make a small compact class b ship that can support 4 crew. I only have 2, 2x1 habs and am wanting to bump the number from 3 to 4 in my super compact design. Hence my interest in adding a decorative bed.
Hello! If only they were as cool as the Hopetech Armstrong cockpit. The Mandalorian vibes are strong in that one.
My main complaint with Stroud-Eklund parts is the name is on most of them. A couple of other ship manufacturers do the same, but not on nearly every part.
My preferred cockpit is the Taiko Himeji command bridge now that I don't use crews at all in my NG+ games. It's compact and the cargo access and armillary are right next to you when you get out of the single command chair. It has a wide view from the seat too. With just a captain's cabin hab, my design with the Himeji bridge is really compact, light and max speed, grav jumps and fire power.
