This game is a template so far. Where it will be in a year or two could make it the most amazing space game ever, or a missed opportunity. I think even if it's the latter, the modding community will come through.
The outpost building system by itself could be a cool separate game because you can create a sprawling manufacturing and trading empire. There are special skills you must heavily invest into before diving into building outposts that are not just for basic crafting and loot storing.
Search the net, you will find amazing guides describing how to build complex production chains across the star systems, construct farms and factories, mass produce food, chems and rare components, sell them on the market and get fabulously rich.
This aspect of the game is next on my to-do list.
A question:
Even if you spent a lot of time building your space station. How often would you use it to sell loot you collected? Wouldn't be easier to add a merchant/ companion to your ship instead?
Perhaps he has a Trade Authority terminal. All the goods are transported by 'Vasco' type employees at the space-station.
Exactly how would "he do his thing" being on a space station as opposed to a ship?
