I just want to be a space pirate...
I wish there was a choice to be a full fledged pirate and join the Crimson Fleet from the beginning, but there isn't a choice for that type of gameplay or playthrough.
Yes there is a story mission about that, but it's just not enough as that mission is really cool and should have been the choice form the very beginning of the game not force you into Constellation even if you like it or not.

You can do it on a NG+ variant tho. Get one where constellation doesn't exist, join the pirates and go infest UC space

Well I think you can be that pirate if u want though. U have the guns on you and the ship so what is holding you? :)

Okay yeah sure, but there really isn't any gameplay for that unless you do that mission.

Wdym? Just get caught doing crime in UC space, easy peasy.

If you mean you wish you could bypass UC SysDef entirely, that's asking for the entire Crimson Fleet quest intro to be wholly rewritten.
An alternate start mod is more or less what you are looking for the more I think about it.

Maybe, someday we will have some kind of fully open world gameplay without joining Constellation ... .

Meanwhile, bounty hunter life is possible after delivering the artefact. Just don't talk to Sarah, learn to build an early game outpost and do your things ... .

ah yes and BG1 is not an rpg because you can't not be a baalspawn, ME is not an rpg because you can't not be Shepard, Fallout4 is nto an rpg because you can't not be married and have a son etc
