Starfield's massive new update has brought back players in droves [Article]

According to TrueAchievements, the update has seen a player boost of over 70% on Xbox alone, meaning that the update has done exactly what it was intended to do. The game is currently sitting above popular titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, Dead By Daylight and ARK: Survival Evolved. Indeed, per SteamCharts, the game has seen an increase in player count of around 16% in the last thirty days, which covers the time period in which the patch was released.

"The new Starfield patch added, among many other things, improved surface maps that make it a lot easier to figure out exactly where you are when you land on a planet, which was something that players complained about when the game was first launched back in September of last year. The other extremely notable feature that the update added is the ability to change the difficulty of the game with new options that are available in the settings menu. Fans can mess around with various sliders and settings, changing only one element of the game if they think that element is too easy for them or too hard for them.

There's also minor fixes to bugs and issues that have been plaguing users for a while now, and fans can now choose between either prioritizing visuals or performance mode in the game depending on their preferences."

I don't see the "droves" but the daily pop is up by 3k so it's definitely an improvment.

You have to remember that not only Steam numbers are up but Starfield's Xbox player count rose 70%

This is really great news! And it leaves me very optimistic for the future of the game. I believe it's only going to get better. However, I'm a little surprised the Steam player count didn't rise as much as the Xbox player count. It definitely saw a nice bump, but no where near 70%.

As of 2024, 52% of gamers play on game consoles, which includes Xbox. Problem is 'PC owner' can also play via gamepass on PC, makes it hard to count PC only players. Also, some players own a game console and a PC, and may have the game on both. Can't even break down the increase on either platform between returning and new players.

I think because the Steam number is for the last 30 days which includes almost 3 weeks before the May 15th update those numbers would actually be higher if they only accounted for the rise in player count since May 15th.

Either way it's a remarkably high number overall because when talking about Starfield Xbox players definitely count just as would any other game available on Xbox. These numbers directly impact Starfield the game.

Microsoft made it an Xbox exclusive when they purchased zenimax. There have been some hints from Microsoft that Starfield will eventually reach playstation.
