Like you I don't think going through unity just to power up is all that needed.
Since i never use any powers why would I need to find more of them? And reading about them tells me I do not want the ones I do not have.
I am interested in what happens when you get them maxed. Do you get something besides an achievement (you should get one for that)?
But really, a part of me thinks the game would have better not to have those. Some feel OP. Then again, I don't like the Main Quest or the whole Starborn theme.
It's only a cheap gimmick that can be entirely bypassed. Not worth leveling again and again through this terribly designed temple "minigame".
The few powers that add interesting utility aspect are useful even if they are never leveled past their first tier.
So... No. There's no other point for NG+ than to clean saves. Starborn writing, powers, the main quest, the Constellation companions, the ship and the suit are hands down the worst elements of the game.
Unless you need to clean your save from bloat, there's no reason for NG+.
