My Starfield Review
5/5 Combat. The combination of music, physics, sound effects, and various levels of gravity including zero gravity, plus a jetpack create satisfying combat that is really fun. There are also environmental effects during combat. The dialogue and taunts between companions and the various types of enemies that you encounter are also quite amusing. The antagonists are also well-designed opponents with various motivations. The spacecraft battles are also fun.

4.5/5 Music. Most if not all of the music in this game fit very well in the respective situations they occur. My favorite tracks in this game include the "Fleet Scum" combat theme, "Aurora" city theme, the track called "Deep Time", and also the "Red Mile" music. While most of the music do not contain any absolutely amazing pieces of music that you would listen to on repeat while not playing the game, it should recognize that a lot of work was done on the music, and they accomplish enhancing the setting that they occur in. The music in this game really does contribute in creating the ambiance for exploring and sets the mood for the game's settings.

5/5 Sound Effects. An amazing job was done in creating satisfying sound effects for the game. One great example is when gaining levels. Most of the sound effects are very convincing.

3/5 Overall Story. Most other games feel like reading one epic book. This game is different in that it feels like reading several books with different stories, but they occur in the same universe. The story telling in this game feels compartmentalized. The stories have great premise, and great development, but then just abruptly end, with the exception of two faction questlines. There are no cutscenes in this game to contribute to the storytelling which is all done through dialogue.

4/5 Main Story/Questline. The main story has a great premise, and develops really interesting, but the revelation of what the story is about is a bit disappointing. I wish there was more to it but basically, it's something exists and that's pretty much it. It's not really expanded upon or really explained. It's also disappointing that you would expect something profound but turn out to be a silly bunch of hocus pocus. Entangled is really great. Unearthed is also great. I would say both Entangled and Unearthed make up for the overall main story lacking.

-----

5/5 Faction Stories/Quest Lines. All the faction stories are pretty great and provide various gameplay.

4/5 Misc Quests/Stories. Many are well designed in that they help you to explore a specific city, discover new areas, and find new quests. Nevertheless, there are some quests that are just OK. Many of the Misc Quests have alternative outcomes and optional tasks that alter what happens.

5/5 Physics. Amazing and satisfying physics in this game. It's not perfect where all objects react as expected but so much is done really well. It really enhances the combat.

5/5 Voice Acting. The voice acting in this game is really great. Although there is some minimal line reading dialogue in this game but would be expected of a game of this scope.

5/5 Planets. There is an overwhelming number of planets and moons in this game that it is doubtful that people would even visit half of them. Combined with the detailed level of procedural generation plus weather effects plus various planetary qualities that are also implemented to differentiate planets and moons. The results are really great. You can visit a planet and see various landscapes, wildlife, plant life, weather effects, and various levels of gravity.

4.5/5 Locations. The facilities are well designed. However, I believe this game would benefit from more facilities and points of interests to minimize the deja vu effect. While initially it all seems great and you're discovering unique locations eventually you will notice the copy and paste. There is basically a mismatch between the number of planets and moons, and the number of unique locations.

-----

4/5 Cities. This game definitely needs more cities and civilizations. It just feels lacking. While the existing cities are pretty great, it doesn't take long for you wanting to visit new cities and civilizations and this desire is not met in this game. It is disproportionate to the number of planets and star systems that exists in this game.

5/5 Items. They did a really extensive job in producing a wide variety and extensive range of items, food, books, magazines, novelty items, tools, weapons, resources, collectables, and so on. It's also amazing that they even include each and every card in a playing deck as an item. It's quite unnecessary, but it should count for something that they went to such extent.

5/5 Starship Designer. They probably didn't need to include allowing you to design your own starship, but they did, and the result allows some amazing creativity. They could've just allowed you to buy premade ships, but they didn't. In addition, the starship designed is not simply cosmetic, but also contributes to gameplay and also progression of the story.

5/5 Outposts. For their purposes, the game provides you with a lot of options regarding what to build at outposts. The ability to build an outpost on any planet or moon that can be landed on is quite an achievement. It also contributes to gameplay.

3/5 Temples. While they aren't too bad, they also aren't that great either. The first time it was an amazing discovery. They aren't really that fun. It's way too repetitive. They should make a modification where when you successfully complete enough temples then less and less is needed to trigger the rings. The first time was fun, but it gets less interesting. However, those who like "grinding" will enjoy them.

-----

5/5 Skill Tree. I like the skill tree in this game and how it is organized. Skill challenges give you reason to use the skill and to also experiment with the skill. The demand in the skill challenge is quite reasonable and can be completed while progressing throughout the game. It is not simply spending of points that they give you. I also like the abilities and enhancement. I would say it is very well thought out.

5/5 Research. I also like the research system in this game. Progressing the research in various discoveries is based both on what skills you have and the specific resources and components that you collect. It is really fun planning ways in expanding research and gaining the rewards.

5/5 Dialogue. This game probably has more dialogue than most other games out there. All of it except for the main protagonist is all voice acted. It would be enhanced if there were a more cinematic to it like other games, but the work involved would be unreasonable and it's perfectly fine as it is.

5/5 Final Mission/Battle. Amazing. Loved how they did it.

3/5 Ending. Let me just say that it was OK. They could've done more, especially regarding the main story, but I'll leave it at that so not to spoil anything.

5/5 New Game Plus. I like how this is designed in giving you a clean start but retaining your knowledge and skills.

So did you put this on the actual review page for the game?
I can literally find a specific Youtube video for every single catagory you rated that exposes how badly the game is and likely there are at least 3 or more for each catagory with most covering multiple catagories those numbers increase even more.
Starfield is a snoozefest.

Have you ever actually seen an NPC....

Eat something?

Drink anything?

I could go on, but uh the point is they dont do those things. They dont play ping pong despite there being a table for that even.

However Skyrim and Fallout 4 on the other hand....

In every way possible the game is a direct regression from the former studio's prior work but hey Im supposed to be ok with that?
Just slap a 9/10 or 10/10 on there because back in the glory days the games were at least pretty good.

Nah.
I agree with most of your scores. Nicely done  I would give the dialog 3/5 instead of 5/5. But right on the money everywhere else.

Is there a game where NPC actually do that? I have seen ones where there are games in saloons, taverns or casino where the player can interact which causes a game to happen. I have never seen the NPCs run a script where they continue the game without the player being involved.

OP, I agree with your assessment, except for your "Ending" category. This game has no ending. It is open world and therefore you can play forever and not reach a ending per se. got a dlc coming soon and that also extends its playability. I know from which I speak being at getting close to 1400 hours in game.

I agree, it's a really good game. It has some things that could be better but overall, a fun game. 8/10 for me.
Mephitic 31. Jan. 2024 um 18:43
8/10 for me too, and getting better all the time.
Seseron 31. Jan. 2024 um 18:44
Nicely written, OP. My numbers may be slightly off from yours, give or take, but certainly within a negligible range.

Things change. Companies change. People change. People come and go.

Change happens. This game might regress in the little animations that your PC and NPCs do, but it certainly progresses in other things that your PC and NPCs can do.

Did you actually read?

Skyrim
Fallout 4!

Literally by the same company.
Makes you wonder if the OP is a Bathesda employee or relative of one. Or the OP just really likes the game. I find it hard to believe the review is objective though. I mean i like the game but i give it 60/100 or there about. Reviews like the OPs are actually bad in that the game's short falls may not get fixed because they might see a review like this and say "See we were right let's leave it as is" That's the LAST thing i want to happen is stagnation. Game can be improved upon and should be. Please refrain from reviews like these that are the antithesis of what we actually need. Let's try to improve the game with objective fair reviews.

Just as an example i haven't given a rating that high since Final Fantasy VII about 26-27 years ago and i've played a lot of games over the years.

His 10/10 is just as valid as my 8/10 and your 6/10 and pouty joe's 3/10, which was a 6/10 until the hate train rolled through his U2'b channel. You can't invalidate someone's score with your opinions.
