cant find good armor
I bought a white bounty hunter armor at the pirate base and run around ages with this very heavy armor now. in 80 hours i never seen a gold or purple armor at enemies (standard difficult). Are there chances for better armors on higher difficulties or do i need crafting (havent leveled this yet)?

UC storyline will help. My companion wears the mantis gear now so I don't shoot him by mistake :-)

Atm i am forced to wear the mantis backpack because the +20 extra weight bonus.
I don't like it either. Its very weak in NG+ It was only useful in my first game because I hadn't found the basement armor yet.

Stuff drops, armor is slow and for me I am running the same stuff as last NG+ and start of game before that. Greatly lacking and makes armor making skill relatively useless.

My suggestion is right after starting fresh, make your way to collecting a spacer communique to get the Mantis base location and get your Mantis armor, then immediately go do the Freestar Ranger story quest to get on the Peacemaker quest and get your Peacemaker armor suit, which for me is the best I have ever found in countless hours of FPS POI after FPS POI. Pretty much nothing worth equipping, armor wise, drops that I can tell. So Peacemaker it is, for now anyway.

Yeah, I don't even nearly like the Mantis look; but it is temporary while you get the peacemaker set, which I am tired of that look also. No transmog that I am aware of and a better set hasn't dropped for me. There is a set I like how it looks the set from the UC Terrormorph quest, that stuff the stats aren't useful to me though. Yeah, they need transmog in the game.

The space suit crafting skill is worth training. You can put a number of helpful mods on your suit/helmet/pack such as increased carry capacity, stealth bonus, ballistic/energy/explosion resistance, healing/regeneration, etc.

Do the UC Terromorph quest chain. It will lead to a really good armor set. How good, I think depends on your char's level.

I find decent stat grey armor, but it's kinda hard to give up some of the special bonuses I have on the pieces I've found. I use the Mantis helmet and suit still, but I replaced the pack with a pack that has +20 carry weight and +20 Oxygen. Hard to give that up at about level 26.

Now, if they add some kind of balanced system to get these traits crafted, then it would be a different story. I can't see that happening though. The best system is something like Diablo 3 has where you use up special resources to get chances at random effects and have to repeat the attempts to try to get what you want. It would be a good workaround during early and mid game though. Just to get a chance to pop some traits on grey items that otherwise would be useful, or that have a look you really want cosmetically but otherwise wouldn't wear because it's not quite as good as what you are using.

My rule for upgrading armor is simple: highest DR wins. The traits are nice, but I can't survive a fire fight with extra 20lb carry capacity or those other situational bonuses.

Yeah, I just couldn't deal with the Mantis armor even with the bonus. My kid said it looked like I was wearing a full body condom and I just couldn't unsee it.
