Who else saw the Geminid Meteor Shower?
I had a great view, greens streaks right above my house. Really makes you humble and realize how small you really are in this universe.

That's the kind of stuff I want to see more of in game, galaxy phenomena, meteor showers, comets, black holes, different types of stars (red giant, neutron, etc), dust clouds, left overs from supernovas. I'm sure it will come in the future, well, I hope.

HeyYou Dec 14, 2023 @ 5:16am
Of late, is has always been overcast when a meteor shower is rolling thru. It's annoying. :D

I took our dog outside a little after midnight to let him do his bueiness and it was a super clear and cold night, 20 F. We also live out in the country and have great night sky views without all the light pollution from the big cities.

Was out there for about 10 mins and did not see a single one. Said, "screw this and went back inside."

That sucks, well, there is two showers each year so, maybe next time.

Is this like a mod or something? I don't see any meteor showers in the game.

No, it's real life, like really go outside at night and look up real life.

No mods, but hoping for it to be added.
I go for a bike ride at night every year during the Persiids 12/!3 August. If the weather is right... This year, unfortunately, the weather wasn't good...

In the past, I have seen a lot of shooting stars out here. When the kids where still at home, one night we walked back to the top of the hill, where no trees was blocking the view and counted 60 in about a hour's time. I think that was in the month of August.

And one time, when a comet was passing close to Earth, when I got off work ( worked second shift then ) you could see this bright star, with a faint trail. I thought, that is not impressive at all.

But when I got home and went back the hill and looked up, wow!! It was huge and had this tail which went about half way across the sky. I can still see that clearly in my mind today. A view I will never forget. Just shows you how light pollution can mess up night time sky viewing.
I had that luck once too. Perhaps not quite as spectacular, because there was no plume of smoke to be seen. But I still remember very well a bright flash with a bright green finish. The meteor flew towards me as I was sitting on my bike on the way home. It only lasted about 5 seconds or so, but the image is burned into my memory :) You don't usually see such bright colors in the sky. This bright green glow, like a welder, - in green.

Like an earth quake. It's good to know what an insignificant spec of dust that we really are.

Yes, it is coming to an end soon, tonight will be lit!
but you always need a dark place. even cities 10km away can spoil the experience. In a city, you really don't even need to try

I live out in the middle of nowhere. Nearest "city" is 8 miles away, and it isn't really that big. (population around 40K) So, nothing like New York, or Los Angeles... If there is no moon, it is PITCH BLACK out here.... and if it's overcast, you can't see your hand right in front of your face. When the sky is clear for the meteor showers, it is SPECTACULAR, but, it seems my luck just ain't that good. Been overcast for 'em for the last several years.

I wanted to but I need to be up and at em at 6am. Guess I could have gotten up early; I need to be in bed to get 8hrs of sleep. I manage about 30 people and all the field operations so I need my sleep. Cant rage out on someone just because my dumb *** couldnt go to bed on time.

I do stand out back and look up at the sky often and have that same mental process though - all those little dots on the sky are stars and I can even see the Milky Way clouds at times. We're definitely tiny - but also huge that we exist and can process what we're looking at.

That still makes me a little envious :) I have a few villages nearby, but at least I have a good view to the north over the Baltic Sea. I usually ride my bike at night to an old bunker with a view over the sea and make myself comfortable :)
But it's too cold for the Geminids *g* For Persiids, however, whenever the weather is good.
