best assault rifles?
Trying a build for assault rifles, currently the only ones I really have are a Grendel and a semi auto Drum Beat, but neither of these are truly practical for how I use them. The grendel requires me to essentially mag dump the entire 50 round magazine to even scratch an enemy, and the drum beat's main drawback is the fact that it's semi automatic, but that's not really super bad. Any better assault rifles I can get that have a good balance between fire rate and damage?

You can mod the drumbeat to have full auto, though, the spread is erratic, making AIDS or hip-fire unreliable. Up close is where they shine best. The Grendel is like that as well. I prefer an AA-99 or Beowulf. AA-99 has a really nice tight pattern when firing that makes it easy to AIDS or hip-fire. Beowulf is a little more erratic, but still better than other options. The most erratic firing happens to be one of my more favorite assaults if going loud n proud. The Tombstone. Thing packs a punch, especially up close, plus I love the look. I save that for animal part farming though. For Pirate/Spacer hunting, I prefer to keep things quiet. The AA-99 does quiet VERY well.

The Kodama is also categorized as an assault-rife for gameplay purposes such as mods and trait bonuses, even though the in-game description even admits that's actually a machine pistol >_>
Bruh, what about that shotgun that shoots energy. I pretty much only used that gun for everything. Bruh, it is so OP. I forget the name. Its sleek and white and shoots energy and wrecks everything.
Big Bang?
Yeah, that's the Big Bang, I found an Advanced Big Bang at level 10 on Deserted Colony War Barracks on Gagarin. But that POI can spawn on any planet with life.

Big Bang is very strong, and benefits from Both the Laser and Particle Beam perks, as well as the Marksmanship perks, resulting in a weapon that can annihilate basically anything in a single blast, even at considerable range. This is before we even talk about Legendary Variants.

There are no assault rifles. There is only Hard Target. Always Hard Target. For every situation.

There are two Advanced AA-99 in the listening post provided you have the needed lockpick skill. These can last a good while even without crafting skills. While the semi-auto beowolf is the best gun, the full auto AA-99 is a lot of fun to play. With the broken economy, You an make it so that ammo is never a problem by around level 10.

Hard Target is an excellent long- to medium-ranged weapon, I prefer it even to a modded-up Magsniper, but in CQC with multiple enemies (like when hijacking ships with many crew on board) it lacks in the firing rate category.
People say there are no "Automatic weapon" skills, but there are, there are two.

Armor Penetration and Crippling (Both Legendary Tier skills though)

These turn Automatic weapons into truly terrifying weapons when both maxed out. Crippling will inflict Downed and Pain States on enemies basically in perpetuity, and the Armor Penetration skill doubles to triples the damage output of these weapons when maxed out

I have a Kodama with burst fire and Armor piercing. Looks more like a submachine gun but it's called a rifle. Plentiful ammo. Accurate for short-medium range.

You can pretty much mod most things to be full auto. Personally I tend to play organically to a degree. I ended up with an legendary maelstrom that has explosive rounds right from the start. A solid legendary drop from the beginning can carry you a ways.

And of course you can grab a few others to supplement.

My go to at this point is an eon legendary pistol with 30 round clip. With pistol skills it’s a beast and tons of ammo,

If you like a certain gun though you can always find one that you can mod out to be what you want.

Heavy weapons are fun as well. And that also upgrades your mining laser that has free usage.

Armor Piercing Baeowulf is the best I have so far, This combined with Armor Penetration skill you will be unstoppable

The Va'ruun Inflictor trumps every other weapons in the game. It'll make the game played on the hardest setting feels like child's play.

I completely agree, those still equiping an AA99, Grendel, Beowulf, drumbeat, tombstone and such likely have yet to loot an advanced inflictor. Now I agree when you are starting out and getting what you get, the Beowoulf is a great rifle for general purpose and has maybe best utility across varying distances; but as soon as you can mod-up an advanced Hard Target and advanced Inflictor nothing else will be as efficient and effective.

What I didn't know that may be helpful, depending on your level and the level of enemies you encounter there will be different "grades" I will call it of equipment.

There is the base. modified, calibrated, refined, advanced and superior "grades" of equipment. The big difference is the damage stats. I have yet to see a superior weapon drop, only occasionally see armor in a superior level stats. This is a bummer to have a legendary drop when you are level 141 that is a base grade or refined and not at least advanced so that it is useful and worthy of equipping. It wasn't until I think maybe around level 40 or 50 that I first started seeing advanced weapons.

It actually is worth while to buy a weapon from a vendor, if you don't have an advanced version and see one at a vendor. Those credits spent you get back by selling the trash to that vendor. Example, I can easily accumulate 100K worth of weapons to vend; but you can likely only sell 4500 to 11000 credits worth at a time per vendor then play the waiting game to sell more. However if you buy something the vendor has that amount of credits then to buy your stuff you want to vend, so you just sell off your junk and get that cash all back, if you understand what I mean.

The Va'ruun Inflictor sometimes can be seen listed at the Wolfs den vendor, sometimes the trader at Neon will have one; but likely not until you have leveled to a height where you start seeing them having advanced versions of the weapons you commonly have seen. The inflictor will frequently drop at higher levels and when fighting more elite va'ruun, if I recall they will be priced at 57K credits. Typically I will see 3 or 4 drop if I take a Va'ruun Prophecy III ship populated with level 80+ NPC that I capture. I don't think any dropped for me at the Vultures roost, too low level. Go to the planets in the level 70+ range and hit bases to farm for them and also watch for them to show up on a vendor as you level to the advance weapon drop range. Keep in mind that even-though you are upper level fighting upper level this game will still continue to shove lower level weapons your way. Get off the calibrated and refined weapons ASAP, you want advanced so your weapon is max level, then mod it up and your weapon workbench.

Other than the RP of mini gunning a base, the most efficient is stealth sniping and using weapon that will 1 shot a level 80 NPC. This means you don't need med pack you dont get hit or seen as you are in chameleon mode and 100+M out. 1 shot 1 kill means never being low on ammo too.

Now on my third play through and nothing survives a head shot from my inflictor.
