What ship habs and why?
I love tinkering with my ship. After 300+ hours I've settled on five habs; control, living quarters, workshop, science and captains cabin. My first ship was millennium Falcon esque. My current ship is modelled off the drop ship from The Creator. So compact ish. The first four are for features I use, the fifth is for symmetry.

I was wondering how many habs others are using in their ships and why?

cpt. quarter, workshop, science hab, med hab (bc a mod makes it valuable), computer hab, engine&control hab, 1 living room hab, 3x all in one hab.

I've pretty much settled on the same choices as you. I don't have a lot of use for the brig (Heller and Lin keep getting trapped in it) and a brig combined with an armory seems hella dumb. (What could go wrong??) The engineering habs are (IMO) a waste of space and the cargo habs (With that infernal stepladder) don't seem to serve much purpose.

agreed. cptn q's for bed and spawns heal item every few days. Crafting stations to upgrade gear on the fly, literally. Then as you need it, additional crew & passenger space. If you cook, kitchen somewhere -- I do not care to cook.

I don't like the NPCs. So I have yet to invest in additional crew, so often I only have 3 habs total, 2 crafting and the captains. I also don't run passenger jobs.

I use mods that allow more than one reactor, and remove the limits on landing gear. My ship is usually fairly small, but heavily armed. Captains quarters, workshop, and pharmacy/research. Maybe an extra hab for a bit more passenger space. (and lots of cargo space) Of course, I generally don't do passenger runs..... but, they tend to find you if you do a lot of planetary exploration. :D (settlers wanting a ride out of wherever they happen to be. :) ) Gives me a ship where I can do whatever I need, and plenty of cargo space for 'loot'. :D

Nova here and a few Stroud, Mostly because Taiyo bug out and the rest are super dark inside...

If you want to min/max there is a site that tells which is the best over all.

My A-class ship only has four 2x1 habs. A workshop and science lab from HopeTech and a control station and all-in-one hab type A from Nova Galactic. When I moved on to a B-class ship I already learned that most of the habs do nothing and are only for looks so instead of getting more I focused on getting bigger ones so that the ship would feel like home instead of a workplace. I got myself a 2x3 mess hall, a 2x2 living quarter, a 2x2 battle station and then a workshop, a science lab and captain's quarter, all from Nova Galactic.

Agreed. For me, less habs is better than more. I'll steal a C class ship, like the Claymore, then swap in a workshop and the other habs that add crew size and some beds. That's only 4 habs (2x1). That gives me crew of 9 and its easy to find any of the crew when needed.

I like the Control Stations and the all in one hab. The control stations are nice because they look like something you would find on a ship and boost your crew numbers. The all in 1 habs have a bed and a place to sit and that sort of thing. I don't worry about workstations since I use the lodge basement with its unlimited storage for crafting.

You didn't ask about manufacturers but I've gotten to really like Hopetech its dark and kind of dingy. Hopetech really gives off an Alien vibe and I liked that movie. Their control station in particular looks really good. I just wish the Hopetech ship bathroom didn't have a laundry basket in the middle of the floor. It's a small detail, but I've been playing for over 500 hours now so I'm starting to notice the little details like that.

It really depends on what build I am playing. In general I want the workshop and pharmacy habitats plus one captain quarters for the bed.

For the build that is all science I didn't even put in a habitat that has a bed as I tend to throw up a small outpost to harvest resources why I run around surveying. Since I am going to do that I at the least build a bed usually in one of the outpost buildings you can build.

For my pilot I did the bare minimum which is captain quarters to allow the rest bonus. I also do passenger and cargo transport so a 3x1 all in one usually gives me enough space to take on the 5 passengers missions. The rest is weapons and cargo space.

Crew mess hall, big living quarter , 2 small living quarters (all crew members have their own bed), weapons storage/brig (Hopetech Module), Computer core , sickbay, science lab, Battle bridge, Tech module with workbenches, captains quarter. all in my little ship ..

Most are for immersion, at least you want all workstations and enough crew and passenger capacity. the most important thing is .. i want to go trough my ship and think .. yea thats nice .

I am looking forward to DLC/mods providing some 1x1 HABS like Heads for example.

That's great! I will wait for the Creation Kit before I mod my game but I am pleased to see those HABZ.

2) Nova Galactic Science Lab and Nova Galactic Workshop
Gives you every workstation AND 4 passenger slots, bridge gives you all the crew you need, only thing it is lacking is a bed... so might add one more for that

I do prefer to have the ship be a simple straight line from bridge to aft bay... adding a 3rd hab might mess that up... idk... hmm could turn it from a 4x1x1 into a 2x2x2 cube, but I do hate ladders... :S

PS. Going from a ladder landing bay to an aft bay made me move all that stuff which had been "hidden" under the ship to its top side such the ship now looks vaguely like an old fashioned "Muscle" car... kinda dig it. Also lets you mount a "Slim" docker on the underside, so bonus.
