What is the best ship in the game?
Most gaming sites say it's the Narwhal. Do you all agree? If not, which ship? (I realize this may depend on your taste/gaming style). I am loving my Narwhal, which I re-named the Samuel Coe in honor of my late, sexually confused, but endearing friend Sam.

The Narwhal is good to get the C36 reactor early. Apart from that it's a ship like any other. Any ship is good if you install good modules and weapons.

Not sure how much the Claymore @ is...

Pardon my dry humor. The Claymore is free. You commandeer it, as they're fairly common.

Narwhal is undeniable and the most expensive ship in the game. Dragonfire II has a great bridge, storage and 3 auto turrets. Razorleaf is the only unique ship NPCs recognize and treat differently. And I wish I would have found the Star Eagle earlier. Those were the standout prebuilt ships in my playthru. You can create better in the ship builder but it takes some dedication. And building off the Razorleaf isn't a bad idea if you like the way NPCs react to it.

Is there a list of minimum level requirements for each ship?

I've been flying around in a slightly modified Razorleaf (better reactor, a couple of extra habs as crew quarters for roleplaying) but I've just ground my way to Pilot 4 and I want a bigger ship, a class C ship. I don't have starship design, so I can't build my own from Razorleaf (which is what I actually wanted to do). I'm L21, which I think is too low for anything good.

With Pilot4 you can fly any ship in the game regardless of lvl.

As far as I can tell, player level limits what ships are available to buy. I could fly any ship, but I have to get it first.

Ah yep.. I can't help on that one. I think I bought the Narwhal around lvl 30 tho. From the Taiyo showroom in Neon.

Yes, most buayble ships are level locked based on their pre-installed modules I think. If you can't buy all of the modules individually, you can't buy the ship.

The special ships most vendors have one of are exceptions to this, though, including the Narwhal. Another example is the Stronghold you can buy in Akila, coming with the best shield generator in the game.

So these ships are a good way to get your hands on better modules, before you have the level to unlock them.

It doesn't actually matter at all, I took the Mantis and screwed strong weapons onto it, and you can do anything with it. The best ship is something you build yourself and you like the look of.

Interesting.... Like everything else in the skills tree, things are pricey. So I may add Starship Engineering and design my own ship--- I have enough points that it wouldn't take THAT long. But the focus now being on Outpost building and capacity, I'll have to get around to it. The Narwhal is pretty good for an off-the-shelf ship. Of course I'd love to add more crew, but need to invest like 8 points into that skills category before I even get near it.

Thanks all - good advice and ideas all around.

Seriously, take a few hours and learn how ship building works. Play around with it. You'll never buy a ship.
I have to agree with this; though for me; it was more than a Few Hours. I woke up in the morning (Roughly 6am), and started working on a ship... by 9pm, I was done... and rather Proud.

It's a bit of a Pain... but once you understand what you're doing... and/or Trying to do; it's soooo worth it. The ship looks as good as any other pre-built, but it will have your touch; and most importantly... the inside of the ship will make sense to You. There is a lot of wasted credits though in order to get the Ship's Interior the way you want it.

And the best part is: Once you get the ship you like; you can use it from beginning to end; as you can UpGrade the various parts (Engines, Grav Drive, Etc.) without making any major changes to your ship. (I believe this, but have not verified, as I'm still only a Class A Pilot) :(.

In case no one picked up on this: A Ship's Class is determined by the Class of Reactor. A pilot can fly any ship based on their Pilot Skill vs the Ship's Reactor Class.

Either the Ecliptic Claymore 3 or the Stormrider 3 are the best ships in the game imo.

It isn't the most expensive ship there are actually 21 more ships that are more expensive than the Narwhal. The Narwhal is only 455,400 credits without any skill discount, but the most expensive is the Voyager 3 at 656,300 credits without any skill discount.

Just so happens I will likely be getting a Freestar Voyager III for free very soon -- it is the ship featured in my NG+2 smuggler's courier impersonation scenario. I look forward to tearing it down to the basic habs and redesigning it -- like most of the gargantuan ships, "out of the box" it is a big pile of ugly. Gotta start savin' creds, I'm still early in this playthrough and such ship rebuilding is pricey!

I've only bought one ship in this game, early in my first playthrough, around 200k as I recall. All others have been custom rebuilds, it's the best way to get a great ship.
