Bugthesda makes mediocre games that are awesome modding sandboxes :P
Cicero can be summed up in 5 words, like pretty much any other npc in skyrim (or most other Bugthesda games.
It's by design, it's how BGS lead writer handles things.
Pretty much the same for Skyrims "unforgettable" quests...
Sorry, as I said, I love Skyrim for it's moddability, but vanilla Skyrim is largely overrated games fastfood.
Starfield fit's the formula for me, the only thing that feels different is the exploration of the generated worlds, but the curated areas like cities and a few quest related poi's gives me the same Bethesda experience I've been having for what, two decades now?
Well there is at least one person, Todd Howard, who was involved in Skyrim that is still around. I do feel like a lot of the developers might of been shifted to ESO, I am also sure there is a lot who have moved to other studios. Most people who going into that industry have their own ideas for a game, if you are in the trenches of any game development studio it is unlikely you are developing your own ideas which leads to people leaving to pursue their own ideas.
Skyrim was a decent game I enjoyed, it is so modded for me now it is hard to remember the vanilla experience. I know I finished the main quest at least once using the vanilla client but that is the bare minimum of experiencing a game like that. If you compare it to the past games there is definitely a lot of stream lining of what you can do, there is also some new stuff like building a house or riding a dragon.
I am amused by hearing the same line of discussions with this game as I saw with both Redguard and Battlespire. Those where off shoot games a little different then the main stream games which I think Starfield falls into as well. I have no doubt I will buy Elder Scrolls 6 it is really only a question of when, it might be when the creation kit is released or when the actual game is released.
BGS still has the same Lead writer, who I am not a big fan of - Emil Pagliarulo, who has been BGS's lead writer since the Bloodmoon expansion, and who was the Lead writer for Bloodmoon, Oblivion, FO3, Skyrim, FO Shelter, FO4, FO76 and Starfield.
Todd Howard was Executive Producer/Game Director for pretty much every BGS Title since at least Morrowind and seems to already been credited as Game Director for TES6 and FO5
Those 2 people are the most important backbone for BGS making all the important decisions.
While other devs certainly have some amount of input, expecting anything different from BGS while Tod and Emil are still in charge is foolish.
Any new game will still be a todd Howard/Emil Pagliarulo game, with all the marks of their style.
The Streamlining isn't a recent development. It is something that has happened since the very beginning. Morrowind has more complex systems as oblivion. Oblivion was more complex then Skyrim, and Skyrim will be more complex then TES6 will be.
Same is true for the Fallouts
And Starfield fell right into the line.
It's their way of trying to reach as many players as possible. They can't afford to make niche games, so they go the extremely popular action adventure/rpg light route.
Nothing in Starfield has been surprising for anyone following BGS closely.
And that's also why I am stnding by my opinion that Vanilla Skyrim is largely overrated.
It's fast food for the masses. That's what BGS makes. BGS is the McDonalds/Burger King/Coca Cola of RPG studios.
Nobody would rate those companies 10/10, yet everybody goes there every now and then. It's popular, because it's made to appeal to a minimum acceptable quality for as many people as possible.
And that's by design.
If you expect a 5 star dinner you don't go to burger king. If you want an excellent game you don't go to BGS.
However what they are good at is the modability of their engine. And that's what lifts their games above the sea of mediocrity.
Now feel free to hate me for that take, but BGS hasn't made a truly good game since at least morrowind, if I feel charitable.
The actual numbers don't agree with you.
Numbers like the "gamepass record of 6% higher than usual" with people paying 10 or 15$ to try the game out? or numbers like steam that show the most miserable ratings of any bethesda title ever produced? i hadn't even realized but recent reviews are lower than 50% acceptance rate, or maybe its numbers like the 12 year old Skyrim already having more players, tragic.
With all the numbers i got a feeling Starfield gets GOTY too, oh wait.
I payed a literal 1$ for a PC gamepass thing that lasted i think 2 weeks (and still barely used it, such is Starfields quality), MS Bethesda then takes that and calls it "biggest bethesda launch with over 6 million players"....that payed 1 to 10$ to rent your game, not even buy.
Don't forget their other records like "most sold game".....of September 2023. Its record after record with Starfield.
