Should be able to bay-ladder into any cockpit or aft connect into any, and for the giant ones, aft on any connect point, not just 1 or 2.
Having mostly ditched the NPCs I am down to captains Q, science & workshop, usually in Y configuration.

this, then, is basically the design for all the ships I actually USE, though I have made a number of cosmetic designs.

I'm with you. I do not like/want any ladders. Are they realistic? Sure. But that level of mechanical realism is annoying ... way too much friction.

All my self-designed ships are single level. I've not yet attempted the one designed that has stairs up to the cockpit. But I plan to do that at some point.

My ship has no ladders anyone has to climb and all Habs on one level. It has a Viking cockpit ( I prefer those ) , close to 9000 cargo, 2800 shields. 7 beds and 2 bathrooms for her crew of 7. And does great in combat. Even with her low mobility of 38. Partially due to the 8 turrets she has. She also has 6 x Vanguard Obliterator Auto Projectors.

Front loading bay. Very important for me.

At this point, she is all the ship I need for any role in the game. But I only play on Hard level and that is the level I have the most fun on, with some challenge involved.

Sexy, but sometimes a ship is just a ship ;) :

Space trucker to the max, and it fights OK as well:

OP asked for one design, I've posted a dozen, and there are many dozens more by others that make very creative use of a somewhat limited toolbox.

The ship builder has a lot of flaws but there are a lot of creative ship designs out there. this is my personal self build ship at the moment..

Every single one of those examples look great.

Better yet the creators of those ships like them which is most important. But others can always buy one from a ship vendor, steal one, or use one that the game provides them, which they can then upgrade if they so choose.

That's well thought out by Bethesda. Kudos to them.

I'll blow my own trumpet and say that this might prove otherwise. I agree that the ship builder is limited, though.

I REALLY like that ship. Lots of good stuff in here!

I had an interesting accident today... was doing a chop shop on a pirate ship I captured (I forget which type!) and it just ended up looking kinda like a scorpion. Seeing that, I did a little touch-up to make the idea stand out...

Allright, I wont shy away from presenting my ship which I am rather proud off.

Which means exactly nothing in the end because what I like versus what you like might not be the same.

I will say this: the shipbuilder does have a lot of restrictions that shouldn't exist, I'll give you that. However in the end I can easily spend several hours in it toying around.

That does look decent.

Empyrion, Galactic Civilizations you can also build ships.
Maya, Blender, 3d Max you can really build ships.
Just thinking, has anyone used this to look up anything needed within the game?

You are all welcome.
