Turrets are OP but any way to fire manually or start them off?
Class C turrets just shred even on very hard, 3000 range and 8 of them over kill but...
I some times want to just kill a friendly ships engine in targeting mode and steal it.

Can I fire a shot from a turret or have them start attacking, or do they only attack red enemy aggro'ed ships?

No. You can stop them from firing, by not giving them any allocated power. But there is no way to manually fire them. They are on auto.

Yeah, the enemy needs to be attacking you for them to activate - they don't necessarily need to be tagged red though, like when ships start shooting back at you for hitting them with EM weapons without turning properly hostile and triggering a bounty.

Ok so I can only have 2 weapon slots for turrets, having 3 just negates any way for me to start combat?

No. You can actually have all 3 slots turrets. What allows them to fire, is the power allocated to them from the reactor. You know, the little white bars for each level of power. Remove those down to none showing and they will not fire.

Yes but I need them to fire on non hostile trader ships in orbit. and they do not initiate combat on non hostile ships.
So one of my weapon slots must be used for a manually firing weapon

I would prefer them to be completely manually fired or at least having an option to switch between manual and auto.

that's not true, mine regularly engage hostiles that are fighting other ships, they never even shoot at me.

This is true. Any hostile ships with-in range of turrets, they will fire on them.

In your case, you don't want that many turrets. 2 or 4 would be enough. But remember, if you don't want them firing, just adjust their turret power down to where they do not have any.

Actually I believe your followers or ship crew actually power these.

You have control over power allocation by adjusting each system manually if you want. You can take your ship's shields down to zero if you want.

Side question: Do the autoturrets have the usual 24-round magazine when you only give them one pip of power???

Only if they feel like it, though. More often than not they won't fire at all. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Tbh they are currently too unreliable to be used as primary armament.

My turrets are mean. 3000 range they annihilate everything even on very hard setting.
Only in targeting mode do they suck but honestly i never get a chance cause ships dead before i even lock on to it.
