Is the Ship Piloting Skill Bugged?
A bit of context, I was playing the other night and I stumbled upon a Spacer Coyote parked on a landing strip on a planet I was surveying at the time. Sarah was my companion, and I had Barrett and another ship mechanic whom I met in Akilla city as crew members on my Narcissus. I had already dismissed Cole Solomon from the crew a while back, so he was chilling back at the lodge.

My piloting Skill is at stage 2, so I hadn't unlocked the piloting of B class ships at this point, but I did have a skill point that I hadn't spent yet, more on that later.

I'm new to the game, playing on Game Pass, so I hadn't known that the Spacer Coyote was a B class ship, so in I went and executed the crew ready to take over the ship.

Lo and behold, before I had killed the last crew member, the ship ended up in space in orbit above the planet I was surveying, which I though was weird, but anyway, off I went to the pilot seat where I was told yep, my skill is not high enough to pilot, so I was stranded in space. At this point, I went into my level up menu, planning to add my skill point into stage 3, but I had to destroy 30 ships first. I rage quit at this point and contemplated starting a new character.

Anyhoo, I logged in the next time opened up the save I rage quit earlier just for a laugh and I discovered that NOW I can use the ship and I promptly landed it on the planet surface, where I got the message informing me that the ship was now my home ship. How was this possible? I was delighted, and I plan on keeping it because it is such a large upgrade for what I currently have, but I am curious at what could happen next.

I plan to sell my Narcissus at the next ship yard and plan to use the credits from the sale to register my new ship, but for that I will need to swap out ships, would I lock myself out of the new ship if this happens? How was it possible for me to pilot the ship in the first place?

TLDR; mistakenly captured a B Class ship that I couldn't pilot and end up getting stranded in space. Reloaded my save and I can now pilot the ship. Is this a bug?

I'm not sure what you're asking as I believe level 2 to level 3 isn't 30 ships but it's been awhile.

Anywho you can use the Flight Simulator in the MAST building to get those.

You can also fast travel from a ship that goes into space that you can't fly back to the surface.

You probably mixed up the current level and the challenge to reach the next one because 30 ships is the challenge to level 4 which allows you to pilot C-class ships.

Yeah I thought 30 was too high for B class.

However, at least one real bug can be encountered in this situation. If you already have 10 ships and attempt to get in the pilot seat of another ship it will tell you it's not possible (as expected). Then fast travel to a ship technician and sell one of those 10 ships and get back to the ship you attempted to pilot. If you now get into its pilot seat you won't be able to do anything from there and are stuck forever.

My piloting skill is level 4 and it says when I try to fly the Razorleaf that my piloting skill is too low. How do I fix this bug?

Did you actually read the skill carefully the one you currently have?
Not the next one?
Did you quicksave and reload? That fixes many issues for me.
Do you have a screen shot of your rank 4?
