Capturing a smuggler's sweet ride
A very large ship landed while I was gadding about a planet, and on investigation I found all the crew and captain on the bridge. My dialogue with Captain Smuggler (a Freestar citizen) led to him trying to stab me to death, so I wasted him and all the crew. Not really a problem since I lusted after his ship anyway. Problem is the game does not provide the usual prompts to take the ship or leave it, and no option to take the Captain's chair. Does defending against deadly attacks by smugglers not count the way flat out hijacking an Ecliptic or spacer ship does? If so, that seems really bogus.

Yes, I have the Class C pilot's license.

some ships simply cannot be stolen sadly it don't matter what grade license you have you A: cannot pick the lock or B: cannot use the chair

If the conversion went different you can actually play as the one that was scheduled to pick up the item from the smuggler. The two times I've encountered it was a spacesuit and a jetpack. That's probably why access to the captain's seat is blocked. There are ship encounters where that is the case unfortunately.

Funny thing, if you do take the item. Later in the game you will actually encounter the person that was suppose to make the pickup when jumping to a random planet. He accuses of taking his goods and you can either pay or fight. I disintegrated his ship lol.

Bummer. This ship has it all -- every type of Hab module, including galley and mess hall as well as staterooms (not just berths) for the crew, it's like a flying motel. Three-story layout with bridge located amidship right behind some massive lasers. Won't see many more like it, I reckon.

The super big ships aren't available to players without console commands/mods. The game has a limit of what can land at spaceports, because...reasons I guess. I really want those Ecliptic Claymores those bounty hunters keep gifting to me.

That was an option, and I can still take it, but I figured it would leave me no way to commandeer the ship. Probably more lucrative to loot the bodies and the cargo hold than take the smuggled goods.

I was able to cap a Claymore, it's now my (heavily modified) main longhauler:

This smuggler ship has even more interior real estate than the Claymore!

You can still hijack it!

The smuggler ship random encounter is a 2-part encounter. Hopefully the second part still triggers even if you killed the smuggler, rather than pretend to be the courier, but eventually the ACTUAL courier should track you down & lead to an encounter in space. The smuggler's ship is "locked" in place until you fully resolve that encounter.

Once I defeated the courier (disabling his engines & stealing his ship, btw), I was then able to return to the landing site of the smuggler ship where it was completely abandoned (I had peacefully resolved that step) & I was able to climb in the pilot seat & take complete control of the smuggler ship.

I made this one because I got tired of not having enough cargo and wanted to see what I could push it to. Max number of parts used and it has everything to craft with but the kitchen.

OK, I will give that a shot, I have a save I can use for just that purpose. Thanks for the tip!

cant once landed as its dialogue random encounter but... in space, you can.
I got a sweet UC Abyss Trekker style , was a rank III , just landed out in the open , occupants went out for a piss and I stole the ship, only had to pick the door lock. ( UC ship )
In space I attack the FreeStar smuggler special ships if over level 68 as most are rank III ships ( 68-72 sweet spot for 40 Reactors and big guns ) The 12 crew slot Renegade is the coolest ( they all called Vigilant ~ that annoying Irish singer guy) , kill the engines, steal the ship, pay off the bounty, sell for over 100K , rinse repeat or modify as a keeper

I just did all of the above and no ♥♥♥♥ I just found the ship empty of the freestar crew and now I can pilot the ship! I came straight here to verify this comment because it is spot on. Follow their instructions and enjoy your new freestar vista mega ship! Frothing this worked! Yeeww!

How do you actually rename ships? I haven't been able to find it anywhere in the ship customization.

Its counter intuitive. via a quick search o the internets...you know, the googler machine and all that?

When you do the "flight check" there is a menu item down along the bottom that allows you to rename

wow, and I thought 2k cargo was a luxury. Well played, and its not bad looking considering what you had to work with.
