So what is the purpose of NG+?
So what is the purpose of NG+?

You lose all your hard work, all the time and money and hundreds of hours you put into the main universe. You lost your relationships, friends, people you may have known, your crew, your outposts, homes, wealth, your faction standing, you lose practically everything except yourself, so why would anyone sacrifice all of their hard work to go into another parallel universe and start all over again from scratch? I see no purpose, no benefit.

For example in my scenario, if I have spent hundreds of hours in the main universe, build all my outposts and homes, spend a lot of time building my standing, amassed a lot of money fame and standing, have completed several hundreds potentially thousands of quests, only for all of that to restart all over again? What's the point of doing it all over again? As far as I can tell, the new NG+ doesn't really give you any different feeling in it, it's an identical clone universe and the events there have not really changed but mirror the main universe.

I mean it would have been more interesting if the NG+ universe was different and the events there were different so it would make more of an interesting gameplay but it's just a clone and it's like you are playing the game all over again minus all your hard work that you put into the game. Why do it?

It was kind of tempting to retire in the playthrough where I could have recruited myself, but I wanted the powers capped first, so I left him behind.

For me its for those times when you return to a playthrough you haven't touched in a while, everything feels weird and you don't really remember what you were doing. You can then go through the Unity and "start" a new game from scratch, but keeping lots of useful skills and abilities instead of starting a fully new playthrough from scratch.

I plan on doing my next NG+ when this game gets a major update. I usually start a new character when I take a break from a Bethesda game or major dlc comes out. This time I'm going to do NG+s.

So if you go into the different parallel universe, what incentives do you get? I heard you get some cool armor and a starship right?

Can you return back to the main universe where you spent a lot of time in or once you are gone you are gone forever?

It's not really a new character, it's the same character you play in NG+

I dont see how losing all your stuff matters. you can easily replace all of it.what you learn about building will go with you and you will make better stuff the next time. you dont lose your leveled up perks.
if you really care about keeping all your stuff, than just keep that character and make a new one thats specifically about doing new game + runs. if that seems like too much work, than just dont do any new game plus + stuff at all and continue your main file.

I don't want to spoil the experience. I'll just say be sure to make a save if you choose to make the jump.

That is indeed the big choice, whether to stay behind in "your own universe" or move on ahead to another. Literally the choice you make at the end, game actually spells it out to you.

You do you.

However, the NG++ universes are not identical. The main quest can be skipped which gives you a different way to get to the unity or replayed exactly the same. NG+1 is quite close, but the deeper you go the weirder they can be....like the one where you meet yourself(s), or the one where Sarah Morgan is a plant. However the side content/faction content is indeed exactly the same with the exception of some dialogue shortcuts due to Starborn precognition..

Ps. You are correct though, for a sandbox colony build purposes....you will have to "park it" in some iteration of the game world.

I have a question. IF I go into the parallel universe of NG+, can I return to the main universe whenever I want? Or is it if you go there it's final? If we are allowed to go back and forth, then I am OK with doing NG+ because then I know I can return to the main universe any time.

It's a game, if you see it as "hard work" rather than "fun" you probably shouldn't be playing it. Unless you're getting paid.

As for why to do it. There are some differences. In NG+ quite a lot of dialogues and missions give you new [Starborn] options. But it's mostly just minor changes, so unless you just like doing those things in the first place, it's not really a good incentive for NG+.

Another reason is you can upgrade your powers each NG+ up to a maximum of rank 10. The difference between rank 1 and rank 10 is quite significant for most powers, and some not worth even using at rank 1 are actually incredible at rank 10.
But if you don't care all that much about the powers, it's not really a good incentive for NG+. Especially because you have to do it 9 times, or at least close to that (the first few upgrades are entirely negligible).

You also get a special starborn ship, and starborn armour. The ship gets better up through NG+6, the armour gets better up through NG+10. But in both cases, they aren't as good as the "best" other options available without even doing NG+. So if all you care about are stats, it's not really an incentive to do NG+

And there's a random chance each NG+ of having a bizarre twist of fate in the universe. For example, in one reality, you can encounter another you at the Lodge at the very start of the game, and he has killed most of Constellation, and will try to kill you.

There are something like 10 such bizarre realities, and the chance of seeing one in a NG+ is like 15%.

I'm on NG+11. My reason is because I enjoy the game. I don't consider it "hard work", I consider it fun. And I wanted to go through and rank up the powers without cheating, while also enjoying the opportunity to see some of the alternate realities, regardless of the fact that the changes are basic and not very far-reaching.

It's fine if you don't want to do NG+ though, you aren't missing out on much.

Yeah I know. That's what I'm saying. Instead of starting a new character this time I'm going to just NG+ instead. That's going to be my main purpose for NG+

To pad the game. Starfield is intentionally designed to be very slow, like trudging through the swamp of despair in Neverending Story. Exp gain/leveling is a boring slog, dialogue is a boring slog, quests are a boring slog, exploring and surveying is a boring slog. NG+ is there to further the illusion of large content filled game by making the acquisition of the shouts/starborn powers into a slog by forcing you to NG+ ten times to fully upgrade them all. Also you get a ship, some armor and the chance to see some "wacky" alternate constellation lodges. yay

No. You can't return.

Forcing you to play thru the story like 10 times to see all the weird quirks and "wild wasteland" stuff just seems lazy and just something they thought up last minute to sink your time into.

There is barely enough meat and potatoes to keep me interested in one playthru, but several other play thrus?? Not happening

So my character remains the same though right? In NG+ universes? We don't "Create" a new character I imagine?

I have a question, once i move onto NG+, can I return back to the main universe or it's done? Also won't anyone notice me "missing" in the main universe once I am gone? Like my friends and crew etc?

In the NG+ , what happens to my faction alignment? All the missions I had done in the main universe etc? Do I restart them? Do I even do them or my mission is different in the other universe?
BSNB Oct 9, 2023 @ 3:57pm
It's like that SNES game, ghost and goblins where you restart the whole game to get a better weapon/power to defeat the end boss.
