That sounds......expensive just to level a skill. I assume you have to purchase more and more each skill level?
Edit: It doesn't matter the level of the ships you kill. Just have the required number of crew on board when you do it.
Is the ship command skill bugged?
Stolen ships do not work.
The original ship works or if you buy a ship.
I can confirm that it works with ships you earn from quests. I ranked it up to 4 while flying the (heavily modified) Prison Shuttle from the Crimson Fleet questline.
Just modify the frontier, or any other ship you have earned rather than captured, so that it has enough crew capacity to do all the skill challenges. It's super, super cheap to switch out just a cockpit or hab to increase the crew stations, and then you just need enough weapons as well so that the crew capacity is also high enough.
You get several ships for free, like the Frontier, Razorleaf, the one from the Freestar Rangers, the one from Stroud, optionally the one from your parents if you picked that trait, the shuttle from the Crimson Fleet quests, etc.
Are you telling me you sold all of them for some random boarded ship?
