SHIP BUILDING Tips and issues
Ok... 426 hours in and around 50+ of those hours have been working in the ship building section. My biggest gripe with the system is that you can't get ALL the parts from one place! You must jump all over the galaxy to get what you want and on top of that you can't save your build half way through and carry on at the next yard, you must complete your ship. SOLUTION (idea for the moders) Make all and every item/part available through your home base landing pad ship building interface but add a 10% price increase for the privilege of rare parts. So if your tight on cash go direct to the manufacture, this way it keeps the relevance of the original game build and offers a solution to TIME WASTING in the latter part of the game when you have the cash... simple, problem solved! NOW.....

Issues I have heard people mention and how to fix it:

1: The ladders are in the wrong place or you cant make your floor/level loop!

Answer: Well yes you can get them to go anywhere you want and YES you can loop any floor without issues.

Solution: It requires a little mix and match, which is why I mentioned having everything in the one place it saves so much time and frustration when you need just on part for example. The issue is you can't just [ctrl G] to copy every item if they don't sell it, even if it is already on your ship (major pain), Anyway, to get the ladders/connection and or loops were you want it requires some fiddle.

1: Just build your ship layout first and look how it works
2: note which parts are not doing what you want them to do
3: If it is a ladder you want look at whats UNDER/ABOVE the intended location is it even possible to have it there? If it is you need to make sure there no other ways it can connect. To do this I generally separate the modules and use a Hope Tech connector (the ones you can walk through in the HABS section there are two types). This will move the hab away from the default join. Then you can put the ladder exactly were you want it, basically FORCING it to go were you want.
4: If it is a loop you want you can't use the companionways, they never work for this you MUST use the Hope Tech connector (mentioned above) This allows you to make the perfect loops on any level/floor.

So using this method I have been able to build every ship design I ever wanted and have the loops/ladders exactly were I want them. Usually it is either a central ladder well or right at the front or back depending on the rest of the lay out, but basically it can go anywhere.

Hope this helps?

I notice ladders tend to be over or under stuff. Adding a store room or moving a docking module can control where the ladders are placed.

I have two ships where ladders and hatches are exactly where I wanted them....and interestingly, it's not because of anything I did.

I got them "close" to what I wanted using what I've figured out in terms of how you can control it, but both of them had one extra ladder in a side room rather than what I wanted which was just one central ladder room.

Then, after my final ship edit to them...which was nothing but changing out engines (i.e. no internal changes), that side-room ladder disappeared and that level change was moved to existing central ladder that all other levels used. Which is what I wanted.

Thanks for the tips, hopefully they'll come in handy for me, since I did find the whole "build a ship from scratch" thing to be a bit hard and confusing to work with. So for now, I'm just customizing/modifying in-game ships to my liking.

Imagine if there was some sort of "save blueprint/design" function in the game allowing players to save and share their designs here on Steam, Gamepass etc...

Place windows on the roof to discourage ladders from being place there. The internal layout of my ship was a hopeless maze until I forced them to move with a few roof windows.

Do you know if windows on the underbelly have a similar impact? I assume they would, right? Because the window would be right where the ladder comes down.

So that works even though the windowpiece gets "sandwiched" between the two hab modules?

There is a ship in the game with ladders that end in the lower windows.

Get the Star Eagle and expand on it. And also, build a Large Landing pad at a Outpost. Get most of the modules for your ship there in one spot.

You can also build a large ship which has no ladders to contend with.

There's a mod on Nexus that lets you get all the parts from the vendor in New Atlantis.
