Unit you have both skills at level 4 and have a character at level 60 you wont be able to get the best parts as they will be locked out.
Also, the Crimson Fleet has some unique equipment that you cannot find anywhere else that improves smuggling chances and combat abilities (with more unlocking as you progress down their quest line).
TBH, as someone who has upgraded every facet of my ship I got to say that you don't really need to have the very best as most ship battles can be resolved with mid-tier stuff even on the higher difficulties. The only difficult ship fight I've ever had (outside the flight sim) was in the last mission of the UC SysDef/Crimson Fleet quest chain where you have to fight like 20 ships with 5~10 allies (which was its own mess to deal with) .
Edit: also check the outpost landing pad with ship builder as it tends to have a wider variety of everything, just nothing super brand specific.
What's with this landing pad? I have added it to my first outpost but it's an empty platform, do you have to hire a crew member to be a technician?
There's a terminal by the stairs.
Meanwhile, Nova tech unlocks some very practical yet compact 4 thrust landing gear that looks good on any ship build.
Nova also has the only landing bay with weapon mounts by default, which don't get in the way of anything else on the ship. Though it is a ladder access type landing bay, so that can be an issue if you prefer the door access type like Stroud and Taiyo.
The main difference between ports is which brand of ship hull modules they carry; in the UC you'll find Deimos and Nova, while in the FC you'll find Stroud-Ecklund, Taiyo and HopeTech. Ports and staryards dedicated to a specific ship manufacturer will only have that manufacturer's modules.
Equipment manufacturers don't have their own staryards; their gear is available in the faction they're based in. I haven't really looked in depth at which one is where, but one example is that you'll find Slayton Aerospace engines only in Freestar ports, as they--like Stroud-Ecklund and Taiyo--are based in Neon.
180? I thought the highest base speed was 150. SAE series class A engines use only 2 bars of power though, meaning I can run 6 of them, so I may keep those. After all, while I'm no freighter, I do have some need to haul cargo occasionally, and that's the best cargo cap with A-class engines.
I think the UI likes to prank us. I keep thinking "180, right?" then wondering why I am 150 top speed on my A class ship and can never get any faster without boosting, whether it is the frontier or my edited star eagle.
So I would not be surprised if it claims 180 at some point during editing, we get excited, and then it takes it away to go "oops we meant 150" to cause all the people claiming 180.
