Sam Coe, bisexual vegan space cowboy
There are so many design choices in Starfield that are baffling to me. Why would you spend millions on a game and not design it well, seemingly deliberately? For example, X-Wing pretty much perfected space combat way back in 1993. Why not just do it the same way?

Thus, if you have a space cowboy character in a game, why write him this way? I was all set to adventure beside Han Solo, Yondu or Mal Reynolds. Heck, I would have even settled for the crappy Solo movie version of Han Solo. But instead we got a weird caricature. And not even a fun wacky caricature.

Sam Coe acts like what a Leftist computer programmer who has never left his mother's basement thinks a conservative might be. He's seen Brokeback Mountain 42 times and half-listened while someone described the plot of the show Yellowstone to him. It's frankly embarrassing to have this level of crass political pandering in a game today. Starfield might have successfully avoided the worst excesses of Woke bigotry, but stuff like this is going to quite rightfully turn off about half of your audience. It would be one thing if the game had a lot to offer technically, but a lot of this game is just boring.

Boring and bigoted is not a good combination.

Y'all are missing the point. Sam's what is called "a poser". He's not a real cowboy. He's just wearing the hat to get chicks.
Hmm, I don't think the person who invented Sam Coe thought of him as a cowboy-poser.
I genuinely think, that who ever invented this character has a paradox to solve: (1) Obviously, the creator has a thing for masculine cowboys, which is afair the #4 male stereotype who US females are attracted to (after Firefighter, Vampire and Pirate) (2) This cowboy has to be within the specs of what is tolerated by the woke outrage mob, so he can't be a misogynist --> has to have a wife , has to be a family guy, can't have a son, can't be racist, so his kid has to be mix-gender AND female or non-binary. Must be lawful good, must be aware of social issues (aka woke), can't be strong and independent (because he's a male), must be a good dad, has no masculine hobbies, can't have a clean home/car/ship (Cora complains about her dad's ship smelling funny), must be a cuck, can't be straight ....
So ... that's Sam Coe.

Sam Coe is a walking bag of depression soaked in self pity. His life was ruined (according to him) by being too close to the burning flame of his grandfather's fame and wealth, subsequently destroyed by a strong and independent woman who was dedicated to her career so now he spends his days attempting to parent a child all alone while riding shotgun in someone else' spaceship. His tales of woe and grief echo amongst the stars as he incessantly regales us with the tales of his perpetual misery and undeserved victimhood every 30 seconds.

I pity his kid. 'Her' kid? I'm sorry but I haven't been told what his/her/ze/zim/they/them etc etc pronouns are. Yet.

Agreed. For a rugged, pioneer-type bisexual vegan space cowboy, he sure does whine a lot.

Right? I really think he was written by a guy who had literally never had so much as a single conversation with a real conservative person in his life. As in he really assumes that guys riding around in the Old West, working oil rigs today, or whatever are cut from the exact same cloth as the baristas at his local Starbucks.

It's weird, its divisive, and its part of the reason why we can't have nice things. If we don't object to absurd (and insulting) caricatures like this, we are going to get more low-quality writing just like it in the future.

Of all the complaints I have about Sam Coe, this is definitely not one of them, your bigotry is on public display.

I think Sam is a bad parent for bringing Cora into all the fights with Pirates and all the other hostiles you meet. If he really cared he would have put her with her MUM, his Dad or in a boarding school, or at the Lodge with private tutors. IDK if he and his dad have Daddy/son issues. You put the child's safety first.

Considering what Sarah does with Sona I see no reason why they couldn't do that with Cora. or we could go find Cora's biological father and have him pick up his slack.

Worse, he'll leave Cora alone with you in your ship while working as a miner at one of your outpost.
Just get rid of the rest of your crew, then you are with Cora alone. Feel free to role play with her whatever you like.
Yeah, this game is sick, dude.
Mutare 4 OCT 2023 a las 16:48
Yeah Once I got thru the whole Sara and Sona I was like wtf is Cora on my Damned ship all the time. I dont like any of the 4 main companions TBh, so I do have a bias in judgement.

You're exaggerating. I would love to have strong political stuff in my video game, either left wing or right wing, but there is little to none in this. I want strong opinions, this is middle of the road.

If you discard any sense of continuity and logic, your argument is valid.

I mean you can say that if you like, but unless you actually support your statement with facts its just like, your opinion, man.

On a side note, I wonder if there were National Socialists who claimed Jews were bigots for pointing out Antisemitic discrimination?

You're not entirely wrong. As I said in my OP, Starfield avoids many of the more classic racist and sexist tropes that Leftists favor these days and I am perfectly willing to recognize that positive aspect of Sam Coe.

If he were a character in a Lord of the Rings TV series, he would be an angrily incompetent racist fool. In Star Wars he would be a buffonish example of a wasted life. In the MCU he would be a poorly-written supporting character in a movie named after him.

The point of this whole thread is that if we don't want more examples of low-quality writing, to see more formerly brilliant legacy IPs ground to valueless dust by political pandering, we have to call this nonsense out in the only way the elites will pay attention: with our wallets.

Honestly, I tried X-Wing, I could not figure that game out, could not do the combat, just felt bleh. Space combat here I can get into.
Anticitizen 1 4 OCT 2023 a las 22:53
None of the companions are good or even useful in combat but this muppet is a standout in failure.

One of the saddest sacks of ♥♥♥♥ to ever (dis)grace my monitor. His kid also, is thoroughly annoying, it's a pity her mother didn't use the pill.

I wish I could convey to you how much I hate when angsty internet kids say "its a skill issue", but thats what this is. Starfield space combat is dumbed down to simple point and click. With no situational awareness tools and no ability to dodge incoming fire it is nothing more than a level check. Turn towards enemy ship and fire, either they die or you do.

X-Wing and its successors have a set of radar screens that show you where enemies are in relation to you, as well as distance to them. In some space games the radar will even tell you if they are approaching you, flying away, or shooting.

Evasive maneuvers also work in games with good space combat. Projectiles in Starfield are essentially hitscan so if an enemy is shooting at you, you are taking damage. If your numbers aren't better than theirs you lose, skill has no impact.

Lastly, an interim fix might be to correct the divide in difficulty between ground and space combat. Ground combat is fairly easy even at max difficulty with no skill points spent, space combat is manageable when you put all your points into it.
