Do I need to do the companion quests?
As in, are they somehow important for the main questline for Constellation? Do I get a bad ending if I don't do them?

Nope. One power is locked behind Barrett, but it's not the companion quest sort of.

No, but with New Game Plus (usually seen as NG+), when you finish the main quest line you can keep going or restart and do the side quests next time around. Gives you something to do on on the next play through. Be wary looking up NG+ for Starfield, though. There will be lots of spoilers if you do.

You do what you want in this game, but you are adviced to deactivate missions if you don't do them otherwise they will clutter your screen with instructions on the upper left.

You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. There's no real 'ending' to the game, you just keep going from universe to universe until you lose all attachment to people and become a murderhobo seeking the artifacts and ultimate power.

Not at all required. I didn't do any companion quests on my first playthrough of the game. It made no difference to the main story or any other mission chain.

If you've skipped Barrett's companion quest, you ended up with 23 out of 24 powers. But I agree, if you miss out a random power every NG+ you most likely only have to play 2-3 more NG+ to eventually get all the powers.

That's not his companion quest, his companion quest is the one to clear his dead husband's name.

Vladmir wouldn't let me progress on the story line because I apparently had started a companion quest for Sarah against my will. I felt forced into that relationship and taken advantage of for it.

You can't start that quest "against your will". It starts based on dialogue options that YOU choose. You can choose options to postpone it, you just didn't do that.
