Is Cutter the only Mining Weapon?
Or is there a better version of it?

nobody mentioned it so I will :)

1. take out your cutter
2. look at crosshair - you will see 3 lines
3. click right mouse button - those lines will start moving towards forward and when they are in close your beam is focused and cutter is much stronger and faster in gathering resources
4. thank me

There's a version with an extra bonus (Heller's Cutter) during the story mission where you have to go find Barrett

Heller's Cutter also has a cool unique skin :mhwhappy:

For all the resources and nodes the game throws at us, it really seems like wasted opportunity that the cutter (or the single unique variant) is the ONLY option for mining. No other tools, no modifications, no skills, just the same tedious routine if we want to harvest those resources. (Which I did at first and then quickly ignored.)

Another thing for modders to fix!

There is a mining skill - Geology

Elemental Pull. Once you get that, you don't need the mining laser anymore. Unless you have evil glee popping enemies packs in a split second and watching them whizz around like popped balloons. It's really good at that.

What I think they missed with the Cutter was, well, cutting. I mean sure, there are the emergency doors, but they're kind of lame, with just four pins that strangely explode when you "cut" them. Where are the opportunities to cut access panels open like in Elite Dangerous, or make holes in chain link fences? Or melt locks if you'd rather risk locking it forever than spend the time on a digipick? This is the heavy duty version of James Bond's laser watch here, people!

Yes, the out-of-control rocket men are fun. I should also point out that it's great for farming ammo from spacers and pirates in low-leveled systems since it doesn't use any.

There is a power u get after the unearthed story mission (Artifact Psi) that when used will harvest any node within 30 meters of you all at once, I assume as you go thru ng+ and level it up the aoe radius gets bigger, or it costs less to cast. Its why I rush it, can just mine while runnin around on a place without needing to stop.

That's true, I stand corrected.

But I was thinking more about the process, as far as I know the geology skill still has you standing in front of a node doing the same thing with the same tool in the same way, but the difference is you might get more rare goodies. Still, it's a good point.

I totally missed that you could do that! After trying to shoot/bash/blast my way into those bolted doors, I just figured they were purely cosmetic... Whoah, yeah it seems obvious now...

the mining tool is only the early game mining tool, if your wanting a better way to collect resources look into Outposts and Extractors <- this is the late game mining system i would think
you can also mine asteriods though ive not really done much with that

Remember to AIM with the cutter - it's a precision tool, not a sledgehammer, and if you treat it as such, it's a LOT better. (you'll notice the crosshairs converging as you aim - when they are centered, they work SO much faster.).

I don't know if you can use the arc welder for the same job - kinda doubt it - but it works a bit better as a weapon.

I would *LOVE* to get a higher grade (refined, advanced, etc) version of the cutter. Modders can probably fix that though.

Note that the laser skill will improve cutter damage; no idea if it helps mine faster.

More good points. Outposts are by far the best way to get resources. And then there's also plundering ships for them, or even just buying them outright.

But still I wasn't really trying to talk about ways to gather resources, for me it was more about disappointment in all the mechanics around the cutter and resource nodes, but a lack of variety or depth. It just seems like wasted potential.
