The BIGGER issue, is that beds and bathrooms can end up erased from existence by side door and front/rear bulkhead placements.
"Where did the bed go?... oh the side door ate it. Okay, redesigning. There, I have my bed back-where the ♥♥♥♥ did the bathroom go?!"
Which isn't even getting into all the times there is no kitchen, or the kitchen is fake and just for show.
Personally I tend to use the all-in-one habitats. Only on big vessels with a lot of building space to waste I use 2x2 living quarters.
Wait, you can build window? Under structure category?
the game doesnt care if a part is a module or a window.
the windows change the interior and might partly remove some of its usability depending on how its/they are placed.
I wish they streamlined the builder for those of us who are not good at the current one, I'd like something like this:
Select that it is a "C" class ship.
Select that it has the full limit of 8 crew members(so whatever beds, etc. are needed for that.)
Select that it has a Research, Spacesuit, and Weapon workbench.
Select that it has a 6,000-mass cargo limit.
And then have that automatically build a spaceship in a semi eye-pleasing fashion like the ones you can buy in the game.
That isn't an awful idea actually. While I would like a more complex builder, with blocks that give bonuses and whatnot, having one that is streamlined down to base stats would be a great starting point to help people learn how to use it.
Perhaps with a measure of random generation built in, it generates a spacecraft with the selections you have made. Even if it mostly comes up with ugly/silly looking ships most of the times you click it.
Can't pick how they link at all. The 'attach' command is basically for show when it comes to hab blocks. If it wants a zigzag maze it will give you a zigzag maze unless it is the literal only possible access spot in or out.
While it seems gameplay element rooms like the workshop and labs were QA tested to be door and ladder proofed to not have their main objects erased from existence. Basic living conditions are entirely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for most setups for both all in one habs or living quarters. Even when it is one that has a full bed+working kitchen+bathroom combo in the first place.
I don't mind losing a useless physics enabled boxer heavybag. I do mind "So this captain quarters will keep the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ desk if there is a bulkhead on that side, but lose the cushy waiting area seating if there is a bulkhead on the other side." and "No see that company does have a bathroom for their 2x1 living quarters and 2x1 all in one habs, it just got erased from existence by a bulkhead."
I can make the ultimate warship out of basically any parts in any arrangement A B or C (Hell, Nova is secretly the best military ship designer. They even have gun mounts on their landing bay! Deimos staryard is "100% deimos parts pride!... oh and also the nova weapon mounting scaffold").
But trying to have the phrase "All in one habitat" or "Living quarters" actually live up to the name without an insane list of 'space bed and bath locations and doorway physics' notes? Uuuuuugh.
