I've also played a lot without crew but again it is another way for players to improve their overall skill bonuses.
You don't have to modify or build your ship but considering money isn't hard to come buy it saves time.
Lastly, some people just love designing things, whether it's decorating homes or crafting space ships based on media or just creating something from scratch it can be a fun experience.
...fun?
Are we even playing the same game?
And you have to keep going back and forth to pick stuff up and use at your outposts.
Your ship's cargo hold is linked to your crafting benches, so you want a lot of cargo space if you're gonna be crafting or building outposts.
Once I maxed out my weightlifting skill and stole a ship with 2,500 cargo space, I didn't worry about not having enough room for all my stuff. Well, once, but that was my fault; I collected a bunch of stuff I thought would be useful but wasn't.
You're not always gonna be at the Lodge.
Ship's holds are much more convenient.
Are companions just pack mules to you?
Give each of them a powerful weapon, one round of ammo, a decent throwable, and some nice armor. Make sure they have it all equipped and they can fight alongside you like badasses.
And each crewmember has different skills which might be useful in different scenarios.
Again, are we even playing the same game?
Maybe the reason I'm having more fun than most people is that I'm not square-pegging the game.
Going to The Lodge vs the ship feels the same to me. But yeah i get what you are saying.
The last point is the only good reason - creativity. Some people like to design cool ships and i very much respect that. (I would rather play minecraft if i wanted to create cool stuff without limitations xD)
Guess i will try to make it in to a mobile base and maybe i will actually like it more.
That's me.
I chose some beachfront property on Jemison and build a small bungalow with a nive view of the sunset. For funsies.
Oh i have plenty of fun in the game. I just don't get the ships. Maybe because i don't do outposts either... yet.
And that was something I thought about doing: trying to build Serenity.
But I decided to start working on maxing my ship-building skills before I really get my hands greasy in the hangar, so to speak.
Imagine if Armored Core, Mech Warrior, Battletech barely had any challenge, and everything was as easy to beat as the first level. Or if you did missions and there were no enemies to engage in combat with your tricked out mech. People would be losing their minds.
That's actually nice to hear; there are so many haters in this forum, so that's refreshing.
And yeah...I've been doing a lot of building and crafting, so that's probably why I've found a ship with cargo space very useful. But I have to build up my ship-making skills because the ship I have is a little slow, being overweighted. It's serviceable, but not optimized.
Okay i'm straight up lost on this one. I'm not trolling. What do you explore in space in this game ?
The few asteroid fields ?
A star yard that you fly towards for 30 seconds and dock for 10 seconds and then go in ?
I got few interesting encounters in space like the Valentine guy / ship but that was about it. Most of my exploration / fun comes from planets.
In short, a creative mind.
If you have no drive or interest in creating your own ship, you don't have to, but that's what you're missing. You're missing creativity and interest.
Given the chance I'd rather decide for myself what ship I'm flying around in, both interior and exterior. If there's something I want to change then I'd love to do that. I don't want to have to fly around in the same little tin can, flying back to the lodge every time I want to craft, or limiting my cargo capacity.
I want as comfortable a ride as possible, even just walking through my ship from cockpit to entry bay or docking port, to captain's quarters for a nap, down to the workshop to tinker with a suit or rifle (even though I mainly do that at one of my outposts now).
You can stay cramped up in the Frontier and grinding through NG+ all you like... I've gone through 3 different ships and am feeling a 4th coming up soon, still on my first playthrough at 200+ hours. I'm enjoying pouring my creativity into ship design, immensely.
Hmm... i spent over 500 hours in my minecraft (modded) playthroughs just making a main base.
Here in this game the ship feels not that useful to me. I will try to engage in the ship buiding more.
