How is max crew calculated for a ship?
Some ship parts have "crew stations", while some have "crew capacity"

In my test build I have 10 crew stations and some crew capacity parts had .25, some had 1.

My max crew ended up being 3. I have the skill that lets max crew be 8.

Crew Capacity is basically the capacity of the ship, but they need stations in order to be assigned. And you need to rank up the Ship Command skill in order to fully utilize stations. With maximum ship command skill, you can have a maximum of 8 assigned crew (plus Sarah, if you choose to use her. She's a freebie, basically).

What your Ship will show as "Crew" in the ship builder is the lower value of total "Crew Capacity" vs. total "Crew Stations".

What do you mean by links with level of each crew?

Edit: like a screenshot? I can't do pictures, I'm on x-box.

modules with grew stations is how many crew you can put in board and max crew is how many will give bonuses for your ship.
so you can not make tiny ship with 8 crew members and get insane bonuses for it. This is how understand it.

Thanks all.

I will increase crew capacity to 8+ and hopefully that works. I just didn't understand what they meant, for some reason I figured having 8 crew stations was enough.

You weren't reading carefully then. "Total" is used in my explanation a few times. Fractions, when added up, turn into whole numbers.

And obviously you can't assign only part of a person. So the total is rounded down.

I re read and failed see it in your post, but ok, I don't need know/understand yet.
If you assign 4 components to your ship which each have 0.25, the total of those is 1.0. A whole number.

The game adds up all the values of all components "Crew Capacity" value. The total of this value is then compared to how many total "Crew Stations" you have. Whichever of those two sums is lowest is the "Crew" number which your ship will show in the ship builder and is the maximum number of crew you can assign to it.

Ok I suppose components are stations or part of them.

I think it's clear now, thanks.
No, "Crew Stations" are a completely different thing than "Crew Capacity". And "Crew Stations" NEVER have a fractional value. Those are always whole numbers.

Also you can get crew capacity in your ship up to 12 for whatever reason. Skill allows only up to 8 + Sarah as stated before.

I did it and it worked. Finally built the best ship I can possibly figure out.

It has 18k cargo
76 mobility, 130 top speed
Max crew of 10 (8 or 9 really), room for 4 extra passengers
4 manual particle beams
4 rear facing auto particle turrets
4 EM
1500 hull HP, 5k mass
40 base reactor, 60 equip power

the -20 reactor points is okay because I can totally power down EM and grav drive most of the time, and to power EM I turn off turrets which mess up boarding a ship anyway

If you don' have enough weapons, the game deducts from your crew count
Jeff Sep 28, 2023 @ 12:38am
Yeah It was when I added weapons that the count finally went up to 10. Weapons added the most crew capacity.

I was doing the thing where you start at hope-tech to get the best landing gear, then go to shroud to get the best engines, then go to landing pad with ship builder, etc.

I had to make an ordered shopping list which is a little annoying but now I know how to do it in the future...

It's not deducting anything for not having enough weapons. That's just wrong.

Weapons just have decent "Crew capacity", and as I said your ship crew is based on whichever is lower, "crew capacity" vs. "Crew stations", so having very few weapons makes it likely that the crew capacity will be lower.
