Why are there credit sticks everywhere?

Seems like banking went backward in the future. You'd figure all transactions would be via face scan or thumb print or something. They are like ATM card except without needing a PIN to get the money. For that matter why are there ATM machines for me to hack in the banks? Just seems odd there would be any physical currency at that point.

And people will always want the convenience of some sort of 'physical' currency exchange, for casual trades, for crime, for privacy, etc.

. . . also, remember there's no FTL communication. In-lore, you don't just have some universal money system that's keeping track of all your thumb-print transactions.

technically credits are just crypto currency and the sticks you can find littered everywere are some kind of wallet.
