Ship size
The ship designer won't let you make a ship longer than 40m in length.

One of the helpful tips I received on a loading screen was "no ship longer than 80m may land on a planet's surface."

When building an outpost the standard non transport oriented landing pad says "only for ships under 40m in length."

Is the 40m limit a bug? Did they originally intend larger ship sizes and remove it from release? Or is it a feature expected in future updates/dlc?

So many times I have voiced a silent scream when discovering the ship I just spent an hour designing violates the flight check because it is 41m in length.

I don't know if its a removed feature or bug or whatever, but a max length ship already bugs up at many of the landing pads in cities -- new atlantis hangs my dock ramp off into space and I have to jump up onto it, and one of the other towns trapped me under the ship with no way to get out. I don't expect 79 to be supported given these problems.

In the editor the measurement is shown from the center of the ship. So 40m to the rear and 40m to the front would be the 80m total for a landing pad. This caused me a bit of confusion at first and may be what you are seeing.

Probably Bethesda couldn't afford to put a million dollars in work hours into making sure that landing sequences work for kilometer long spaceships on procedural landscapes, or in city landing pads.

The 40m shown is from the center point, not the total length. So 40m fore and 40m aft

If you build a long ship or wide ship and land on a pad you will run into issues. You can get stuck under your ship, inside your ship, inside objects near the pad, or fall under the world.

I can't wait until someone makes a doctor who police box ship. It's smaller on the outside
