"A crew station is used to assign crew to both Outposts and the Spacefarer's ship."
So the more crew stations you have on board your ship, the more crew you can assign to that ship (according to the wiki).
The game does a very bad job at explaining how anything around the ship builder works (and a lot of other things).
As for the posts, this is the one game I generally don't bother with the discussion forum for, as it's mostly full of rubbish :)
So yes it is useful in piloting/combat if you have the people with the right skills.
Basically you want to have enough crew stations to cover the people you assign to the ship. It doesn't matter if those seats come from your cockpit, control station hab, or whatever.
Also worth mentioning that the 'passenger seats' habs have aren't for crew. Those spots are for non-crew on your ship. Like if you take a terminal mission to deliver passengers somewhere.
I have been playing solo and don't appear to need any crew.
Seems like computer core isn't as good as a hab with a lot of crew stations, like a battle stations hab.
I have one of those on my dreadnought turret corvette, but it might be computer core does something else as well that I haven't found information on.
Your crew adds bonuses to you that stack with your own skills. Their skills don't work the same way as yours do.
For example Sarah has a point in leadership which lets you assign one more person to a ship than you normally could.
Sam Coe's Piloting skill adds +30% to your ship's top speed and +1 engine power.
There's a list compiled here if you want to read more:

So they are effectively upgrade components that add a percentage to things.
Can I load all of Constellation onto a ship then sell it to the pirates?
Hah no. They just move over to your current assigned ship like the rest of your cargo.
You get a Jester award. Unlike most people just trolling for them, you have actually earned it.
Unfortunately for you, they just become unassigned and go back to the Lodge or whatever. Even if you remove them from your crew on a planet with no settlements they always find their way back. Space magic.
