Are Lin and Heller a one time only for recruitment?

I'm at a point where I can recruit them. I know they are both suited more for outposts, but I don't have any yet and I don't know when I will.
I don't want to recruit them yet and not have anywhere to go with them but I don't want to loose the option eather.
Can I get them later if I pass now?

You can just recruit them and leave them unassigned until you build an outpost. I think you can recruit them later as well, but no reason to not do it right away.

I know that Lin is automatically recruited her even if you didn't tell her to follow you initially. I would assume that Heller is the same since, I recruited Heller to join the ship during his quest. I just found out that they are on the team roster where you can set them at out posts.

I think they were automatically added is because they are tutorial characters.

Thats what I did, you can recruit them but not assign them anywhere. Not sure if the roster has a limit or anything, I think you can actually have every single recruitable person on that list, when they aren't assigned somewhere they go off and do their own thing and wander till you tell them to do something or join you.

I grabbed them because I felt sorry for them being stuck in space. Plan to get rid of them as soon as I make planetfall.

they dont cost anything, so there is no reason to not recruit them

I recruited them and they're always on my ship. I don't know how many people your ship can actually hold but at one point I had Sam, Sam's kid, Lin, Heller all on my ship. I didn't assign them IIRC, they just stay there. I kinda wish their knees would stop clipping into the floor though.

No, when you decide not to requite lin or heller they go to a place for you to find them. Lin goes to the bar in Cydonia not sure where heller goes too
