For ship builders
How many credits did it cost to build your first ship? Without console commands/mods etc..

I ask because I am at the point I want to give it a shot, but don't want to get halfway through and run out of cash. I know I could start small (cheap) and add on later, but I'd rather not and just go for broke right off the bat. I've got just a little over $300k.

550k was my first ship, I waited until I could do a C class.

Also I got a 620k rebate after, so technically they paid me to buy it.

Like the one piece at a time song when you really get into shipbuilding you are going to be buying one part at a time. Various Staryards and landing spots have different parts. My first play through I really tried to keep the ships "pure" and just stick to upgrades the manufacturers would use but this time I'm going full on Frankenship with parts from all of them but as to how many credits I spent I have no idea. I got to the point where there was nothing left to buy except ammo and ship parts.
pro-tip: if you build a large landing pad in an outpost, you get access to the ship builder but with access to all brands in one spot

I simply take a ship to then make it my own, there wont be any of the original left.

At one of my first tries i had about 150,00 and it was way WAY short, and this was just for A class parts. If i could have afford the build it would have had close too 10,000 storage though but sadly could not finalize.

Cost go way up the more advanced a class is, i figure for a C class with main focus on being a armored and weaponized mega transport can cost up too 1.500.000 or more.

I typically will spend about 1.5 million credits to get everything how I want it. It is mostly the engines, weapons, grav drive and generator. The rest adds up a little but not significantly.

Habs and structures are cheap and is where most of the asthetics come into play. I have made 3 ships so far all coming out to about the same, regardless of how it is designed.

For my current ship, I purchased one and modified it for a total of around $500k (purchase price plus modifications). Without any ranks in the trade skill.

It's really going to depend on how big your ships is, and what all you want included. I usually stick to only 5-7 habs, but some people want more or less. And it'll cost different depending on the class. Class C gear costs more than A

Thanks for all the responses. I am about to pick up the Star Eagle and will probably just do some heavy modifications on it while I save some more cash. Then see about stealing a ship later on for a complete rebuild once I unlock some more tiers of ship parts in the skill tree.

One thing to keep in mind is that some ships you can steal or purchase may have components that might not be available at your current level to modify a ship with. For example, I grabbed the Silent Runner, which had a reactor, grab drive, and 2 engines that don't unlock until higher than my level (34). So by purchasing it, I was able to have better parts than I could by modifying the Frontier or scrapping a cheap ship I stole to build from the ground up.

are auto-turrets sufficient for ship combat when you have a very large ship? i.e. can I ignore manually targeted weapons and use all auto-turrets? viable?

In my experience with them, yes their perfectly viable. That said, I ended up swapping them out for manual weapons because it's harder to disable ships with them in my opinion if you want to board frequently

My rebuilt Frontier currently costs about 150,000 and I'm building now a B class ship which I estimate to cost around 250,000 in parts.

It's an expensive hobby!

Not sure b/c I did it a piece at a time and then eventually just switched to a better base ship that was awarded from a quest. But now it takes about 25K to 50K to modify the ship.

I had a full-auto build but I now only use a single auto weapon and 2 other manual weapons. A few reasons for this:

-Auto weapon skill tree has very good buffs to targeted systems, and you can't target if you go full auto

-Auto weapons need a very good outside weapon mount to properly work. If you put it on the front of your ship, it can't fire sides or rear. It really needs to be on the outside of a wing tip or on a structure putting it even farther out so it can have the widest attack range of motion possible. For this reason, it's hard to use a ton of them effectively.

-On some story missions you may want to power down auto weapons but still want to disable a ship to board it

Edit: I'm using 4 DIsruptor 3320 Neutron turrets, and they wreck pretty much anything that gets close, except for the level 72 crimson fleet at kreet. It takes quite a few hits to take those out.

roughly 250K credits, late game it's pretty easy to make it up again.
