And their 1 rank will add onto your rank in that skill.

Example you have rank 1 in Astrodynamics skill. That crew member's 1 rank in that skill will add onto your skill, so that is is now rank 2 of Astrodynamics.

But you need atleast 1 point in the applicable skill for it to add on.

Nope, not all crew members skills work
For Example
ROSIE TANNEHILL,
Rosie Tannehill is a doctor. You can find her in The Hitching Post in Akila. She specializes in healing and health skills. You can recruit her for 12,000 Credits.
But 3 rd level of her Hellness perk level dont give any profit
Many ship related skills work from Crew, but others do not.
The Team system, as I understand it, is like the Card system in Fallout76, But if I want to play a diplomat who has the skill of 8 crew members and the Skill to Improve the Effects of Team Perks, Why doesn't it work, why recruit a Team with perks if they don't work , this is also an RPG
Why are there 28 possible crew members in the game if only those with ship-related skills work?

Hasn't been covered yet, but don't forget she also has to be assigned to your ship, not just travelling with you.

Nothing. Your skill is already maxed for piloting.

The game is terrible at telling you this, but the truth is that companion skills do not necessarily do the same thing as the player's skill does. Sarah's astrodynamics gives a 50% reduction (multiplicative) in fuel cost, but does not increase jump distance. I'm afraid you'll have to level up the skill yourself or find/buy a better jump drive, there's no quick fix just assigning a companion unfortunately.

Sam's piloting is really nice to have; he increases your ship's flying speed that stacks additively with your own piloting skill if you have it ranked up, and on top of this he gives you 1 permanent power to your engines (it shows up as a "green" bar that you cannot reallocate).
