Where to build an outpost?
I think I threw up one or two basic buildings to get the achievement but I really haven't built what I consider an outpost. Mostly because I have no idea where the best place to build one is or if there is even a best place. Criteria I think would be located near one of the major settlements with a good amount of materials to be harvested.

Where have you built your and why did you choose that location?

Nah, proximity to the settlements doesn't matter. Here's some stuff to look for:

1. Temperate climate
2. Strong magnetosphere
3. Nice flat regions (not hills or mountains preferably)
4. A confluence of 4+ decently common resource fields in one outpost area
5. He3, iron, aluminum, beryllium, copper, and silver are the important ones, try to get multiple per outpost

Make sure to check the actual shape of the resource fields within your outpost circle too, because you'll want to fit a good amount of extractors in each.

The BEST place to build an outpost would be inside the Unity, so you could actually continue to build on it in NG+ runs, but sadly the game doesn't let you do that :(

Very painful to find best place, that is hardest and very long to find good place for mining all type resource in one place to avoid cargo link issues. Cargo link and storage limited is not fun, I prefer something like fallout 4 where you had unlimited storage and easy to set up supply route with no limited.

Wherever. you can always delete an outpost and build it in a different location.

I find them both terrible tbh, although considering all there was to make in Fallout 4 was purified water, adhesive and fertilizer it was rather easy to manage and after a while the settlements were just places you traded your thousands of purified water for thousands of bullets or fusion cores

So you can only have one outpost? Can you store the buildings and components in your cargo hold of your ship to transfer them? Or is it designed to be a material sink to keep you mining?

A little question about outposts... can they at all be deleted? And are no res given back form deleting structures?

I looked at some on ship building I guess I will use it to research outposts as well. This might be the first game in a long time where I have to go watch videos just to figure out how best to do things.

Yeah you can delete them. Walk up to the initial structure you placed and on PC I think you hold R to remove the outpost. You also do get everything back when you deconstruct buildings so it costs you nothing to delete structures.

Weird if you get all materials back why not make it so you can just store it the pull it out to place it wherever you want it? I could see if you only got some back it would act as a material sink causing a game loop, the way you describe it seems like adding extra steps to reproduce things.

I tried checking my inv for the res when deleting and it was empty for res. Also, I'm going to try again to delete a outpost. Guess I need to delete the structures first?

My first and currently only outpost is on Andaroph(sp?) and it has aluminum, beryllium, helium, and europium all inside the margins. Andaroph also has iron so I am going to make a smaller secondary outpost to link to my main that will take care of a lot of the base resources.

I looked the same question up a while back. Apparently it depends how old the outpost was. If you made it in your current play session you get everything back. Older saves, probably not.

I cannot confirm this though (as if my experience matter lol).

Why is a strong magnetosphere so important? Not saying it isn't, just want to know why.
