Why is every single named NPC essential...
I don't go around and kill NPCs, but sometimes I just like to see what happens if you just cap some annoying prick. They are all essential. The two brainlets who are planning a robbery in the Well are essential. I don't get it.

They are not but on the earlier locations, it will feel that way. There are quests that interact will all of those that can't die. It shows you how many quests are out there. As a criminal player I have had issues with that from time to time.

Breaking quests would be too easy

And being a bethesda game, accidentally killing one of those essential characters is also not that far fetched. That would ruin many many games.

Besides that, in 99% of the games you can not kill characters that are important to the story. So why this expectation? I see this question pop up every once in a while and it makes no sense.

because this game was outsourced to Bangladeshi/Indian code Sh1tters to save shekels, then Bethesda stitched it together. They had to make Quest NPCs unkillable or it would litterally break their game. Same reason they "require" you to have an SSD, its not that their 2015 graphics need it, its just that Pajeet doesnt know what data to hold in Ram and what not to, so they had to resort to coding everything as a hard drive draw.

Ex-coder, ask me how i know. Never trust "Honest" Todd

I don't. I finished it 4 times and I am done with it :) I don't have hangups with older games which imho is a healthy attitude.

I played BG3 and that is not true. Entire questlines can go up in smoke if you kill the wrong person.

Because if you kill them, the dialogue that you'll have later with the Free Star Ranger wouldn't make sense. And adding a different line of text just in case you kill those thugs was obviously too much work for Bethesda.
Starfield is pretty lazy in this regard (compared to other rpg who react to certain player caused circumstances ... like Gothic from 2001 for example)

Same, but I also think the game most comparable to this, Outer Worlds also allows you to kill everyone?

I like Starfield. I don't get the hate for it. I spent like 20 hours just exploring ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Kreet, this game is massive.

Not sure if that was also possible in OW. I don't think so. Then again, I was disappointed by that game in general. I found it to be incredibly boring and lacking way too much stuff like interesting armors and weapons. And the whole corporations are bad mojo just did not vibe with me at all.

Morrowind did it best. Kill an VIP NPC and you get presented with this lovely message:

"With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created."

Brilliant!
