How can I actually pick up and collect any mineral resources planetside???
I'm having a show stopper problem when I try to collect mineral resources while exploring a new planet - I can see them, I can scan them, but I can't pick up and collect them at all. All the guides I've looked at just say to cut big chunks of minerals up with a mining cutter and then they will be collected - but this doesn't ever work. The mining cutter has no obvious effect on any mineral resource at all. I looked through all the key bindings, but saw nothing there to help either. So how do you do this?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

there are two types of deposits-one underground you need an extractor (outpost building) for and one you can mine with the laser-the ones you can mine with a laser look like rocks and simply aim at them with the mining laser and it will break up and enter your inventory. The exception is things like chlorine/water and gasses-these will sometimes seep up into pools you can scan-to harvest them you have to exit scan mode and press E to pick up.

If you can't blow it up with the cutter, close the scanner interface and just interact with it with the E key. That's how you harvest those larger non-mineral deposits like Gas vents and water. You have to actually close the scanner entirely to get the interact option.

If it's a rock, use the cutter like you did in the tutorial

Some, you can just walk up to and press E

Also for the cutter, hold down Aim Down Sights (on PC right mouse button) to focus the beam, you'll be faster

Are you serious?

The deposits, the little rocks that stick out from the big rocks.. with names like Iron and Nickle on them.. you use the cutter on. The cutter also has a concentrated targeting mode, right click. Which is good for tougher deposits.

The area deposits, where you open your scanner and it says Nickle Here and is a big brown area on the ground.. you build an outpost and an extractor on.. with power and storage and it collects over time.

Rocks you cut by holdng ore cutter's beam on them for a couple of seconds.
Puddles you simply collect - the prompt to collect resource is usually in the center of the puddle.
Gas mounds are also collected like the puddles, but the prompt is set closer to the top of the mound
Lastly, large painted areas of the ground are extractor placement zones - that's for the outpost extractors.

Thanks all - I found 1 rock that I could actually break up with my cutter, but apparently 99% of the other stuff I see can't be collected that way. Going to take forever to get enough stuff to build my 1st outpost beyond just a desk sitting in the middle of a field I guess. The outpost staff can't be happy about that! (I never saw any tutorial for doing this at all, like so many other interfaces in this game).

You actually have to mine minerals in the first minutes of the game...???

Make sure that your scanner is up while using the cutter and keep the name of the mineral up. Sometimes if you jitter about too much the scanner loses the mineral name and your cutter will still be firing but not actually working on the mineral. Also try using the cutter from a different angle.

You literally are told by Lin, in the first two minutes of the game how to mine stuff...

Resources are dirt cheap to buy. Start buying up anything vendors have when you pass them by and you'll have all you need in a short time, very short compared to manually mining it all.

I'd want to mention a confusing aspect of the game that new players might not realize. If you're walking around and find lead for example. Then you mine it, and it breaks up into chunks in front of you. The chunks left around you, you can't pick up. This is because you've already picked up as much as you can. Those are extra bits. It can be a bit confusing, because you'll sit there and try to pick them up and you can't. However, if you look at your inventory, you'll see that you picked up a bunch of lead already. I hope this helps.

Jemison Mercantile, your (almost) one stop shop for rocks. The Neon Mining League in Neon (obviously lol) is the only mining store on an all ocean world in settled systems but it does have some imported rocks.

Seriously, once you start trading junk for rocks, unless you really want to outpost mine, you will hardly dig in the dirt all day ever again.

Good rock vendor is Midtown Minerals, Akila City, Akila, Cheyenne system, quite a few of the harder to find inorganic resources. Also, if you're serious about mining be sure to exercise the Elemental Pull power once acquired, it's not selective but it is flawless and fast. Very good for toxic gas resources like Argon and Chlorine b/c you don't have to approach the vents closely and risk lung damage or other affliction.

Just to mention there is an Ore store in Akilla City as well. Near the Sol Cole Statue.

Laser cutter = 15m range

lol ... , it's a weapon too ... !!! While you're on Kreet, you can use it to farm levels easily before you go to New Atlantis. No ammo cost ... !
