At least that's what I've heard people claim. I haven't tried it out myself or gotten any turrets to work personally.
Or maybe they need to have the enemy grab aggro ( fire first) before they "turn on".?
Welll... There is a difference between Auto Turret and Auto Gun.
The Auto Turret aims and fires at enemies on its own.
An Auto Gun fires just in front, but as soon as you hit the fire button, it won't stop firing until the energy is depleted.
At least that's how I experienced it.
You can put them in other places.
I put three on my 3rd weapon group. I went into space combat and my turrets were shooting at something outside my cockpit view the moment I came out of fast travel (I didn't even have time to target what they were shooting at). I don't have any points in the turret skill in the Tech tree, and the turrets I placed on my ship were at the front facing forward:

They do need to be "powered" to fire and will stop firing if you take all the power from them manually.
