Ground battles are no hazard really with good guns. Using a refined beowulf in semi auto with AP rounds and high powered mod and I can easily kill level 100 special(multi health bar) enemies. Heck the toughest enemies I fought were some wildlife which had some massive health pools and did massive damage on a level 75 planet.
Edit: Currently level 47, power leveling my self through hunting that wildlife for the massive exp they give.
Fortunately I now save the game before every door and every jump, the games crashed so many times i have no choice but to do so. Lost maybe 50 hours of gameplay due to bugs and crashes and the ai cheating. As I said.. it does obviously cheat, that doesn't make it more challenging really and it doesn't mean the ai wins.. it just cheats and loses or doesn't cheat and still loses. I don't mind reloading if i mess up, but the game tends to crash when it reloads or generally just loads, it's one of the major issues with all the cutscenes.. the game crashes after you go through a door, after you jump in space, after you land..
But i persevere. Over 200 hours now and climbing.
I am also using double particle beams, with a c34 reactor. It really isn't that much more useful against lv 60 ships than it is against lv 20s the problem is having 3-4 ships firing at you is a workable solution, having 6-8 is beyond the capability of the shields.. might as well not even have them for the length of time they last for.
The ship designing etc sniping, collecting stuff, exploring, story and missions is all good, but the core game is absolute trash.
On ground, I can kill anyone at any level.
As for figuring it out.. shut up.. I'm lv 40 how do you think I got here.. I'm 200 hours into the game I've killed hundreds of pirate ships.. so I know what i'm talking about.
The beowulf is a fast firing light carbine with impressive damage that will melt through most target's health pools with very cheap ammo.
Also there is your powers, and jump pack. Sometimes the best solution to fighting the enemy is to take to the skies and shoot them from above.
Don't just sit there and get hit, move and take cover. In space that might even taking a loop around an asteroid, switching thruster mode and gliding backwards while shooting.
id love to see you play an actually hard game.
The beowulf is junk you stop using those around lv 30. I have one that does 240 damage it's awesome fully upgrded with armour pierce and another with whitehot rounds.. but then so is my kumar thing that spits out flechettes at 60 damage a pop.. it's way better, shreds everything.. have to reload alot tho.. got a unique named sniper that does like 340 damage.. but it only hold 6 shots.. still headshots kills pretty much everything in 1 shot. Ground combat is abit lack luster, sometimes i snipe them, sometimes go in with shotgun, sometime microgun.. depends.. the best fights are the old colony guard bases.. and the hangers where they get backup
Loving the game it's great fun, just wish it would stop cheating. The space fights would be better if they attacked with 8 ships but in 2 split waves.. so 4 up close 4 further off.. sort of thing, 8 ships on you is no challenge it's just reload.. time. And reloading isn't a big issue except the game often crashes.
I prefer to run everywhere where possible, just to stop the game crashes at cutscenes.
Pure damage per shot is not the biggest deal, it is how often you hit, and how reliably you hit the target. Beowulfs are good for those two things. 340 damage is nothing for high level wildlife, I'm dealing with mobs that will eat literally 2-3k worth of damage before going down.
My shotgun hits for over 300, but I use it for the utility and multi target damage of the explosions, not it's raw dps.
If you can't handle it turn down the difficulty. Just because the game has challenges doesn't mean they are cheating.
