I'm getting 90-160 fps on Ultra at 1080p with
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3d
Radeon 7900 XT
32 GB RAM
4 TB NVMe SSD

CPU: i7-8700K, Unlocked, 6 Cores/12 Threads, 12 MB Cache, 3.7 GHz - 4.7GHz Turbo
RAM: 32GB (4x8GB), DDR4, 3000MHz
GPU: GTX-1080, 8GB, 1670 MHz / 1835 MHz OC
SSD: 970 PRO, 1TB PCIe, NVMe M.2

Playing at 1080p, medium settings (Shadow & Motion Blur on low). FPS? Don't know / don't care / not even important enough for me to check because it runs buttery smooth without any pauses, lags or stutters. (However, I did get the latter when I tested high settings.) I'm happy with the way it looks and performs and am having at great time!

Have you tried upgrading to ddr5 ram, I went from 40 fps to 80 fps from that alone

No I haven't, but I VERY MUCH appreciate your advice/tip and I'll keep it in mind.

I really don't care about FPS and never check to see what it is. I only concentrate on "does it run smoothly" and if I'm satisfied with the visual quality. Chasing some FPS score doesn't interest me. I played Fallout 4 on my previous build (which was geezerly when FO4 was first released) but still enjoyed every second of that experience for about 3 years while on LOW settings. Later, after building my new (current) rig, I played it even more on ULTRA settings. Honestly, I didn't really notice much of a visual improvement (possibly because I was still playing on a 1080p monitor / 60" TV.)

Besides - my motherboard is old enough that I don't think DDR5 tech existed at the time so I suspect it would be a bottleneck & I wouldn't see much (or any) benefit. For now I'm going back to my typical plan of building a new rig every 7 years which would mean a complete new system in about 18 months.

But again, I'm very much enjoying my experience with no complaints in Starfield right now at medium settings & 1080p. Some may consider that blasphemy, but... ok, I'm happy. :)

1440 from 1080 is noticeable imo in terms of detail and clarity,

It’s like when you had standard def tv and couldn’t care about hd then you saw it and thought wtf.

As comments above though it’s about what matters to you. There is a certain wormhole you go down though once you start upgrading that is somewhat of an addiction to get out of :)

I started with a 120” projector and Xbox and was happy with the wash out…
….Then massive tv and 1080 with 1080 gpu pc and was happy with it. I was getting annoyed when I moved in a game I wasn’t clearly seeing everything ‘quickly enough’ (both gpu/fps)…maybe I was sitting too close who knows but either way it began…

3080gtx 10gb
Odessy G7 27” monitor
1440p
990 pro nvme ssd 2tb
Can’t remember ram but it’s more than 20gb

Not the best rig in the world but I’m happy with it…for now..

Oh.... wow. Thank you for taking the time to post this.

I've been thinking about what you wrote over the past few days and it really helped me remember upgrades I've made in the past and see things in a new perspective. I have absolutely no doubt that I'll agree with you 100% once I update my hardware.

Fortunately(?) my monitor (an 11-year-old 60" 1080p TV actually) seems to be on its last legs. Any replacement will be much higher res even if it's mid-range. My 5-year-old computer build is starting to get a bit old, too, with a GTX1080. Lots of decent stuff, but I've considered upgrading the GPU even though I'd take a minor hit on the GPU performance due to a newer card being PCIe 4.0 on a PCIe 3.0 mobo. But... I'm just not very enthusiastic due to the reviews of current AMD or NVIDIA cards vs cost point. I guess that's all completely moot until I have a display capable of improved graphics.

Anyway, thanks again!

Glad I could help. Don’t think about it too hard although I know it’s a wormhole. Move on when you’re ready. If you’re good with what you got then good for you and carry on. I’ll be honest - there was something classic about 1080p so move on when you can’t take it anymore not before :)

I would say yes obviously the higher you go the better your experience but it’s all relative.

Just make sure any upgrade on gpu your cpu would not bottle neck it. Then figure out a monitor, I would suggest Samsung odysseys but there may be better out there.

Dumb question, but how do you see your fps?

There's a few ways.

You can turn on fps counter in steam settings for one. Click the steam Icon top left, then settings / ingame.

Depending on your hardware there will also be options for monitoring within it's software, for AMD it's under the performance tab in adrenaline. I'm sorry it's been awhile since I saw the Nvidia settings so I can't help there but sure someone will.

Then you can also download 3rd party software such as MSI After Burner or RivaTuner (if they're still a thing) or alike.

Hope this helps

You can look in steam settings > in game > turn on FPS counter and enable it to show in game.

Thanks for that.

16gb ddr4
i7
1660ti
external ssd

All settings on medium except grass on high.

40fps on mars surface and in caves
30fps in cydonia.

Wish I had better, but, I'm just happy that I could play.
