I'd like to see ray tracing too, but it's a ancient engine and therefore somewhat unlikely

Don't talk about things you know nothing about

Of course not it's a BGS game.

No one knows, there are basically no details about the game yet.

But there are certainly lots of assumptions and rumors.

This is the only answer anyone not involved with the development of the game can realistically give right now OP. I'd just ignore anyone making any claims like the other people posting in here.

We have to be happy they get rid of the 60FPS lock, ray tracing is a bit of a stretch.. You can see from the videos it's the same old engine as fallout 4, you don't need to be involved in the development of the game for that. Nor does the video material looks like it has ray traced lights.
So that it will have ray tracing at release is very unlikely, thats what I said and its true.

Lol you're just making ignorant, and also just flat out wrong, assumptions and don't actually know what you're talking about.

For one thing, the FPS has been properly unlocked in Fallout 76 for a few years now and in Fallout 4 multiples of 60 work fine without any physics or animation bugs, along with a new update coming out for Fallout 4 that is heavily implied to be unlocking the framerate properly. For another thing, they continually update their engine by adding new features and refactoring old features to be more efficient and/or flexible.

Seems you have information that tell otherwise.. where is the source ?
What is flat out wrong and what is ignorant ? Can you specify or is clear language not your competence ?

Your assumption that it's "the same old engine" is flat out ignorant and wrong. They constantly update their engine with new features and improving existing ones.

Their engine didn't have support for volumetric lighting when they released Skyrim or physically based rendering. It also didn't have tessellation or even ambient occlusion in Skyrim. All of those were new features added in Fallout 4. Fallout 76 added regional weather systems that dynamically move across the game world. Both games have also brought iterative improvements to LOD transitions, asset streaming, and view distances along with Fallout 76 including significant performance improvements for their volumetric lighting and fog systems. Fallout 4 also brought with it a switch to a 64-bit executable and proper multithreading.

The assumption that BGS doesn't improve their tech and stay with the times, again, is just wrong and anyone saying that is coming from a place of ignorance. It's exactly the same as saying Unreal 5 is the same as Unreal 1 (even though UE3 was technically a full rewrite it did still include a small amount of leftover code from UE1) or CryEngine 5.x is the same as CryEngine 1 used in Far Cry.

I didn't say they never improve their engine, but it looks a lot like the fallout 4 engine which was not exactly state of the art during the release, always felt clunky and dated even compared to titles 10 years older (HL2) , not to mention the terrible performance it had and physics tied to framerate.. It never had state of the art physics or graphics (ray tracing would be something like this) and Starfield beeing any different would be a pleasant suprise.
If we can expect upgrades that its to things that are already common for most games since quite sometime (Like the 64bit upgrade for F4, at this time most indie games were already 64bit, other games had it for quite some time at this point) and not something ground breaking and imperfect (like ray tracing)
and its OK, new tech was never bethesda games strong point

And tbh Cry engine 1 and 5 don't even look alike. However Starfield looks like Fallout 4
