Razorleaf is a great mid-ship. Unfortunately it lacks power for all your systems, and the jump distance is quite low. But as you mentioned with C- and B-upgrades you can improve it a lot. At that point you might as well go for C all the way though.
I don't want people to flee though, I want to kill or board them :)
If I'm right you can't have 180 speed and 100 mobility with spare power for weapon system for all C-class parts.
I haven't bothered to build ships yet (a bit of a time sink, but it's a cool feature). If you want to buy, my suggestions are Abyss Trekker (combat focused, found on Paradiso), Shieldbreaker (balanced, found on New Atlantis) and Narwhal (balanced but slightly more combat focused, found on Neon/Ryujin enterprises).
You can reach 100 mobility but you will lose speed to around 140 if I remember correctly. You can't flee or kite anymore, but it doesn't really matter if nothing can kill you or get away from your 3500-4000 range beams.
For me? Fully upgraded Frontier.
Just set up an outpost somewhere with low gravity, put a landing pad next to it and you have all the storage you could possibly want. Including containers you can dump resources into and use in crafting, without needing to hold them. That way you don't need thousands of cargo space and can have a zippy ship for dog fights in space.
Nah, the opposite is true actually. Building your own you pay for 100% of the parts. Starting with a (presumably already good ship) you can customize it to your liking for much less cost.
That said, I do believe people like the Ecliptic Claymore 3 if you really don't want to do any ship building.
The Claymore is also one of the best for re-configuring in the shipbuilder, I've used it more than any other model.
