Pretty much, yes, it's useless other than the buffs it provides. And the buffs are also pretty pointless for most of the food.
You just need to cram it. Although to be fair who, ever, healed a broken bone by eating an apple and synth beef?
Edit: Oh, and there is a mod that lets you hold E to eat a thing. Its easier to notice the heath going up that way. There is also a mod that reduces health levels by reducing the per level gain. This gets really important if you go out beyond level 100 as the enemies get super spongy and guns stop getting any better long before that.
I figured, "It's a Bethsda game. Play it like it's Fallout 4 in space!"
And boy, did I ever need to unlearn that!
I was collecting all of the crap, trinkets, and tchotchkes because I thought I'd have to break 'em down to get materials. And I was hoarding so much food, too.
But Med Packs are just plain everywhere, not to mention Trauma Packs and Emergency Packs...I'm never wanting for heals.
Food seems...useless.
