Not alot of laser weapons

I've put 3 points into laser weapons then noticed balistic weapons are super strong and alot more common. One of my balistic pistols deals 100 damage while my strongest laser rifle deals about 40. Are there more/stronger laser weapons later on or should I just go balistic? Theres also particle which ive heard benifits from both laser and balistic...

Edit: and what about mods? Are there mods that change balistic ammo to energy?

No cap in this game so you will end up with points for everything apparently

Yeah. I just wanted to kill stuff with guns that use something else besides bullets. Maybe I'll just put points into melee or unarmed or something.

A laser gun still needs something to draw its energy from, which are the 'clips' imagine them like batteries with a certain amount of charges, and a larger clip mod is basically modding the gun to accept a bigger battery. Atleast that is how i have viewed the laser weapons, like in fallout 4, where its an actual like chonky 60's battery you stuff into the gun. You can see it best with the Va'Ruun particle beam rifle, you take the battery out, it vents some sort of heat and overheated particles, before you put a new battery in

I mean the Solstice pistols are king of the whole 'energy weapon' design if you ask me, the whole business end of the pistol being the MAG, come on guys get it right, magazines not clips. When I saw my character pull the whole front end off I laughed.

Would've been nice to see some crazier energy weapons than what we get. Where's the plasma grenade launchers? The big laser beam cannons that stop firing when you release the trigger? The homing lasers like something out of Raystorm? Or the wiggly laser beams straight outta Raiden 2? No BFG 9000 knock-offs, anyone?

I've found like 3 laser weapons. 2 rifles and a horrid pistol. That's it. While there are probably three dozen ballistic weapons. Hell, there's more particle beam weapons.

Yeah true, so far i found the Equinox, Solstice, Arc Welder and Orion.

I would have liked to see something like the tesla canon from fallout new vegas. A big ass weapon you mount on your shoulder and just blast enemies with.

I think I read somewhere that they are good for eating away shields and possibly robots. Laser doesn't always translate to brute strength in every game. Maybe the higher tiers have more additional side effects rather than raw DPS? You are probably better off switching to a traditional assault rifle/shotgun combo even as back up if you are going to the melee route but best to keep an eye on legendary version of that laser

Lasers are good against robots, but you also need to look at fire rate.

Low damage, but high firing rate will mean more damage per second.
