CPU Upgrade Results: Ryzen 7 3700X to Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Hello everyone!

This is just a post detailing my experience in Starfield after upgrading my CPU recently. I had been planning on making this upgrade for some time for better performance in other CPU intensive titles like Escape from Tarkov, but the disappointing performance in Starfield led me to finally make the swap. I suppose I took Todd's advice from that most recent interview...

(No disrespect to the 3700X, as it served me well in most games.)

My (new) specs are:

RTX 3070
Ryzen 7 5800X3D
32GB DDR4 RAM @ 3000MHz
Western Digital 1TB SN550 NVMe Internal SSD
1440p 165hz 27' LG Monitor
Windows 10

My in-game settings in Starfield prior to the swap were set to the medium preset with shadows turned to low and resolution scale at 75%. These were the recommended settings from GeForce Experience that made playing on the 3700X the most tolerable in terms of FPS.

I should also note that I am not using the DLSS mod (going to try that next) or any altered settings files from Nexus. I did, however, enable ReBar for Starfield after enabling it in my BIOS. Enabling ReBar did give some minimal gains, even on the 3700X.

I decided to keep these settings after installing the new CPU to get a more direct comparison. My "benchmark" consisted of visiting three different areas within the game and watching the FPS counter to get a rough idea of how things were going.

New Atlantis: 3700X: 45 - 60FPS | 5800X3D: 55 - 70FPS

The performance gains here were the least noticeable, although there was definitely a difference. The lows were not as low, and I was actually seeing a more consistent 60+ fps and above in many spots. That area with alot of vegetation next to The Lodge really tanked my performance the most. I think New Atlantis is quite ugly (especially with my settings), so I hope we see a patch at some point which might smooth things out a bit.

The Well: 3700X: 70 - 85FPS | 5800X3D: 80 - 100FPS

To nobodies surprise, indoor locations seem to run better on all hardware. The performance boost in this underground area was very noticeable and much smoother overall.

Space (above Jettison): 3700X: 55 - 60FPS | 5800X3D: 60 - 80FPS

Space ran okay before, but is now more consistently above 60fps and has smoothed out considerably in comparison, just like The Well. FPS increased when I exited the cockpit and walked around the ship.

Overall, there were meaningful performance gains in each area I visited. That being said, I think further optimization could be done on both my end and Bethesda's, even though most of my playtime at this point has involved messing with settings. Additionally, while the 3070 is not a bad card, it could also be limiting factor in my performance as well.

I hope this post might be of some help to those with similar specs. I welcome any suggestions in regards to tweaks I can make in-game and what mods might help performance.

Thank you for your time.

See, it still drops below 60. Game needs patching badly.

Yea the 5800x3d is a crazy good cpu I went from the Ryzen-3600 to it & wow I've never had such a improvement in gameing performance with a cpu such as the 5800x3d.

Yea the game clearly has a issue with performance that's my biggest gripe with the game.

There are several nexus mods that apparently "help" with performance, you try one of the 140 of them.

I got my 5800x3d about a year ago now, I tested Sons of the Forest when it came out with both the 3700x and 5800x3d. Very CPU intensive game when it first came out btw. Everything else was left the same, 32gb ddr4 3400, nvme, 6900xt.
With the 5800x3d I gained like +30 FPS average vs the 3700x at 1440p ultra native.

Enjoy your new cpu.

----------------------------
This is for others that might come in here with a FULL amd build with both amd gpu and cpu. This is not for the OP btw.

Btw you can turn on SAM if you haven't already and gain up to 5-7% performance which is not a lot, but will help some. It also keeps your lows a little higher too. It has been tested by frame chasers on youtube as well, but they had a 7800x3d cpu with a 7900xtx and it did help some.

I feel the same way. While I haven't played a ton, I've actually enjoyed it alot so far, performance aside.

Wow, that's a huge performance gain. I'm looking forward to testing out some other games! I appreciate the SAM suggestion -- will definitely look into that.

Mine too, other than performance it's actually surprisingly good.

I tried to edit the post real fast before you replied.

That 2nd part was for other people that might come in here to read.
Sam is only for if you have both AMD CPU + GPU

I didn't mean to confuse you, just to add help for others.

Yea I had to heavily overclock my RX6800 to get a stable 60fps at all time's at 3440x1440p I still have to use FSR but at 85% it's very hard to tell the difference but at least Starfield is a very cold game GPU wise I'm using the optimized settings from that Unboxing youtube channel so you can get an idea about what settings I'm using but yea litterly 95% of all game's is always maxed settings no FSR no RT & at 80-100+ with my rig Starfield max settings no FSR was like 40-45fps something isn't right especially when Star Citizen somehow runs better than Starfield at max settings without FSR.

I love the game but this performance is trash.

I wonder if a 5800x3d would be better than my 5900x at 4k.

The 5800x3d is the best gameing cpu in that gen of cpus to get any better you'd have to replace your whole motherboard on how much better I can't say but in gameing performance it's right up there with even the new cpus.

Yes at low resolutions. I only play at 4k myself.

The cpu matters less at high resolutions that graph tells you how good they are for gaming use that for a reference just note there is no better gaming cpu on your motherboard than the 5800x3d without getting a whole new board.
