Is there any use to generic loot?
In Fallout, you could use most of the generic loot you found (pots, fans, paper, etc) to craft your settlement. Here it just feels like useless clutter, or did I miss some way to make use of the generic items I come across?
I stopped looting most things entirely.

Unless you want to decorate or hoard so you can fill a room or a table with it, not really.

No.

Originally, I was picking it up thinking it might be for something or for salvage.

Only the items that say "used in crafting" are things to pick up, or of course weapons and ammo.

Some statues, or even wine or something, may have a high sell value so you may want to snag them. I stuff such things in my ship and sell from the ship. Their value is much lower than weapons and such, so I sell some when I've nearly sold the vendor out of their credits.

The items with the funny yellow thing when looked at, in the lower right-hand corner, are contraband and have a high sell value. They require a shielded container on your ship, to get by planet security, or you could just fly to "The Den"(a space station) to sell them.

Unless you want to decorate, as the previous person(s) said then the junk items have no use. ;)

I'm of the opinion that the "clutter" objects are to troll us when we are looking for the things that have a use; for example, the stupid toilet paper rolls that I see EVERYWHERE look a lot like "digipicks"(which you want, of course) when you see them in the scan view.

You also often find various outfits in places. I liked that I hoarded some different outfits on my ship and for a quest I later encountered it said, "buy a suit or wear a security outfit"; I had a security outfit already on my ship. ;)

No. I finally sold all of it and stop myself every time I feel like picking it up. You can decorate your place with it but it is extremely tedious to do so. I have not tried the top down placement mode yet. Maybe it is better.

The miscellaneous items are less like Fallout where they can be used for crafting, and more like The Elder Scrolls where they're just miscellaneous clutter.

I think just selling or decoration. I pick statues, tablets and some lab equipment as part of the loot for selling

No. Aside from selling most it for very little. Some are more valuable. And the tape is just hilarious because it is Bethesda trolling those of us who played Fallout 4 and got in the habit of picking up tape for adhesive.

Duct Tape should count as adhesive!

It counts for leveling commerce otherwise thats about its only use + decoration.

Thank you for this topic! I was wondering if I needed to used any of these items for crafting, like you could in Fallout 4. Well I guess I can chill out on my hoarding.

I keep collecting and carrying around alien eggs, some in the ship inventory, some in my inventor, and a bunch in Sarah's inventory to see if something "FUN" will eventually happen.

Been disappointed so far....
