Limit on number of recruits? Downside?

Within just the first 15 hours or so i've had a dozen people ask to join my crew. Is there a limit on number of crew/companions you can recruit?

Also is there a downside to simply saying 'yes' to them ALL then deciding which ones you actually want on your ship later?

Yes there is a limit, it is determined by the amount of crew members that your ship can hold and if you don't have the ship command skill you can only recruit up to three members.

You can recruit more than your ship can hold, but they remain in some nebulous realm called "unassigned". You can also assign them to staff outposts, for whatever those may be worth.

Not true. That limit only applies to how many people you can assign to a ship. You can have more and just keep them idle, or assign them to outposts.

You can learn the skill for up to 8 per ship at max skill, though I'm not sure what you'd use those 8 crew for. Flavor, I guess? There's no real downside to having them unused, from what I've seen - no payments-over-time once you've hired; just the initial cost.

I did forget about the outpost, but other than that I was right about the crew just on the ship.
