I can install Starfield without Proton: is this normal?
Hey guys,

A few minutes ago I put Starfield to install here.

But I use Linux and my Steam client shows the Install button for the game even if I don't choose a compatibility/Proton mode. Is this normal, i.e., does the game really has a native Linux version?

Well, I chose to install it via Proton, but I am wondering if it has a native Linux version.

Thanks in advance.

Sure, I did. But AFAIK, even the part you mentioned does not mentions Linux. So, why does a Install button appears even if I don't choose a compatibility mode?

Or am I missing something here?

right, if it doesn't mention linux then there's no official support

Ok, but that was not my question. My question was why it shows a "Install" button even without we don't choose a compatibility mode.

Sounds like you selected a proton for Steam to fire up non-native games. Check Steam > Steam Settings > Compatibility and see if "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" is toggled on.

Thank you.

I just checked, but "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" is off. This is strange.

I mean you can install it, but I doubt you can run it without proton

That doesn’t mean it won’t run on Linux, I believe people got it working on the steam deck, I just don’t know how playable it is

Yes, this is what I'm doing. I'm installing it with Proton.

What I really asked (did you read my post?) was if is it normal to be able to install the game without select a compatibility mode (Proton).

you also asked if it has native linux support

Yes, but it depends on your Steam Play settings.

What settings do you have for Steam Play?

If it's on for 'supported titles' then you get the Install button for titles known to be compatible with Proton (typically anything 'Steam Deck' verified). Steam automatically picks which Proton to use, and the games compatibility setting will be blank.

If you also have the 'all titles' ticked, then it works for anything in your library.

In either case, usage is the same as if it was a Linux native game, i.e. you don't need to pick a compatibility option for the install button to show up, and if you go into the games individual settings, the Compatibility section will be blank, as it's using Steams global settings.

@Boothy,

Thank you so much. now I understand what is happening here. :)
