That doesn't seem to matter as much. My 2nd outpost i found a spot with 4 of 5 resources, despite having set down in the center of a pure iron field.
That is pretty much how to do it. Land, jump onto your ship, get the outpost out and drag it around as far as you can. If it shows up resources, great, if not, simply fast travel to another spot.
Does that upgrade the ship scanner or the suit scanner? Yeah it is hard, is jumping from spot to spot until you find one the only good way to do it?
Oh wow okay that's interesting then, I'll just pick anywhere then, and okay guess I'll just have to keep doing that.
Meanwhile I tend to build one-ressource-outpost anyway, for it´s easier to manage the traffic of goods.
