What's the point of outposts?
It seems like a lot of effort just to avoid buying some crafting materials and getting minor jump and scanner bonuses. Am I missing something or are they just a time sink for the fans who obsess over in game housing and building?

Besides grinding experience?

Probably just another source of annoyance as npcs attack and destroy your camp regardless of whatever defenses you have in place.

To build the biggest most insane thing you can, just like Fallout 4, like you said for people to obsess over.

You don't even need to do it to play and complete the game so its no great loss if people don't like it.

I think the point is to role play, or build a cool base to hoard your loot.

no mans sky has them. i find the idea worthless in both. presumably it's for storing your companions so you remember where they are

I was hoping there'd be some X4-like opportunity to build useful production chains but much like Fallout 4 settlements seems to be a janky and pointless feature for the roleplayers.

The idea is the same as it is in No Man's Sky. They gather resources and can combine them together to create finished products.

Of course, you only really need resources in the amounts those outposts can produce to.. create larger and more numerous outposts. The end result is that if you don't want to build outposts, then you can ignore the feature entirely. If you want to build them, then building them can allow you to build them easier.

Have only ever had one outpost attacked, and they didn't destroy it at all. Never even attacked it again after they were killed by the ballistic weapons and one of my companions.

Outposts are just the proverbial carrot dangling in front of you as a reminded of what they could have been if they'd been well thought out and implemented... Instead, they're just a hassle. I still built one, so I can hoard all the crap I find but they could have made them so much better.

I wish there were pre-made rooms, complete with furniture. As it is, we can't make a bathroom (no showers or baths), kitchens, and so on.
Also I don't know if there's any profit to be made there, unless you take the raw materials manually and sell it.

I just made one, on my "Dream Home" planet, which looks nicer, to have to job to offer to the starter team remnants, don't know yet if they will survive but made a luxury outpost, except no showers and kitchen. At least they will die in a nice place.

As with Fallout 4 what made the base building great was modders, Bethesda made the foundation and modders made it awesome, Starfield will be no different. Its exactly the reason why Bethesda half arsed it.

Bad troll bad. Mods will be out when the creation kit hits sigh...

Probably for immersion, role play purpose, to show off on reddit that you spent 20 hours building a functional outpost for le updoots!

I store my contraband. Could make a base for fun. Can generate materials. Can do mission board jobs that require them.

Fallout 4's had somewhat of a purpose for role playing though. You could look at it as rebuilding the Commonwealth for the Minutemen faction. You had to meet basic needs to attract new settlers and you could call in reinforcements near your settlements with the flare gun or mortar strikes. DLC's added a lot more depth such as factory production.

Starfield could have been the same with LIST, but maybe that was cut content. There will defiantly be more to come with DLC's, but it's a shame there is even less than base Fallout 4.

Technically: If you put points in the right skills you can craft your own spacecraft modules and build a craft on a platform from scratch with raw parts.

But right now, many use them just to grind xp. E.g. you build an outpost which has Aluminum AND Iron, You build a bench to craft frames with the raws. With frames, Aluminum and Iron, you can build storage container on end. With enough storage, you can build a bet, sleep 24h, craft 7,000 frames on that bench, get 7,000 XP (takes two minutes). Ether you scrap the frames or you sell them elsewhere (but you need a huge cargo hauler for that).
Rince and repeat.
