You are missing the "B" button to equip the current item you have selected when in your companions inventory.

For weapons, they need at least one of the correct ammo type to use the weapon you equip to them.

you can access their inventory through the dialogue menu. once in there you use the b key to equip the items

might be a different key on controller, but it shows it on the bottom.

You are. Trade with them, and then actually tell them to equip it. The hotkey for telling them to equiop something is shown down in the bottom right when you are viewing their inventory. For me it's the "F" key, but I may have rebound it from default.

The screen will throw you off, because it shows YOUR character for the character model, but as long as you are in the companion's inventory, it will be the companion that equips it.

Edit to add: Also, for guns, make sure you also give them ammo. They will not actually use up the ammo, but they do need to have it to use the gun.

Talk to companion and trade gear. Then press the equip button while you are in the companion inventory. It says on the top if you are in your own inventory or companion inventory.

Understand the issue you are having and try to resolve it before posting. Often it is a silly question, and the silly answer is that you are blind.

However you put the item into their inventory, equip it with B, and then they should use it. For equipment they rarely use their best armour unless they are outside a normal atmosphere or they are in a location with no friendlies.
Honestly just equip them with what you'd like.

The companion management system is awful, unintuitive, and ancient game design. It's incredible that they haven't evolved or improved the design from the FO3 / New Vegas days.

works for me, you may need to equip the item once you transfer it to them.
