Starfield Character Builds
There is a lot to digest here. In Fallout 4 my build was simple Stealth Assassin. I played the entire game with a silenced pistol and a sniper rifle. Cyberpunk2077 was pretty easy too- Pistol, Katana, stealth, and speed. Ok, so it's been established I like stealth. :) In this game I'l looking at the skill list:

Skills- I created the labels as categories.
Unveral, Human Education
• Weight Lifting- carry gear and supplies
• Persuasion
• Research Methods
• Medicine
• Gastro

Physical
• Fitness- Physically fit, Increased lung capacity
• Boxing- melee
• Weight Lifting- carry gear


Piloting Craft
• Piloting
• Target Control System
• Ballistic Weapon Systems
• Astrodynamics- better grav drive performance

Weapons and Combat
• Fitness
• Pistol Certification (more damage to people)
• vs Personal Lasers? (more damage to robots)
• Shotgun Cert?
• Stealth
• Ballistics- high speed projectiles (against people)
• Boost Pack Training
• Security- Hacking
• Dueling- Melee

Mining, Exploration
• Geology
• Surveying
• Scavenging
• Research Methods
• Boost Pack Training



Then I look at the Backgrounds that offer 3 of the above. What's different about this setting? There are pilot skills, which I think I want, or can I rely on a companion to pilot the ship? I want to hack and have persuasion skills.

I'm thinking at first I'll be doing more fighting than flying so maybe I should just work on my stealth combat skills and go from there.

So questions, what are the skill sets of your companions to plan a better build?
I also realize that the Background are just starting skills, You can build up the others, is there a level cap?
Does anyone know at what point you are spreading yourself too thinly regarding skills?
If you've been playin since the beginning and you use stealth, how well has that been serving you? Thanks! :cozycrashfish:

So only you can pilot an the piloting skill is mainly there to allow you to fly better ships (rank 3 & 4 gives you access to higher tier ships).

Note that your background has a small effect on some convo's and then gives you 3 starting talents. All talents are available to you (but some require you to invest more points into the tree etc).

It's a good idea at the start to spread thin because some talets are really good and you want to get them asap.
Really good talents to get early

Stealth - Gives you a stealth meter
Persuasion - Opens up different paths
Security - Open locks
Boost Pack Training- without this you cannot use the jetpack boost
Targeting - this allows your ship to target specific components on enemy ships. It's needed to disable engines which then allows you to board and loot/steal ships instead of just blowing them up.

Note each skill has 4 levels, once you get 1 level you will have to complete a challenge to unlock the next level and you cannot spend a point on that skill again until the challenge is complete. For example, Security you need to open X amount of locks to unlock the next tier etc.

So background just determines which 3 traits you start with.

Re: Character creation the most game changing elements are the perks, these cannot be gained at any other point (but can be removed if you don't like them). The Kid at heart is really good (spawns your parents that are funny and give you great stuff) but tbh all are good and have solid in game effects.

Companions skills either effect themselves (like their damage etc) or boost stats on your ship (like give more generator power) but again they cannot actually fly the ship, you have to.

The trait is called Kids Stuff

And the trait is quite fun. Your parents will give you unique items or stuff like a brand new ship.

Annoying Fan is also interesting. He kisses your ass but he gives you free stuff and has a perk just to carry more stuff. He's one of the few companions that doesn't care if you're completely evil either.

Aye I got kids stuff (forgot the name), Adoring Fan and Wanted. Tbh I found the Adoring fan to be a bit...dissapointing. I find him hilarious but he hasn't given me ♥♥♥♥♥ and I cannot take him with me, he just hangs out on my ship and worships the ground I walk on.
